Blocked/runny nose any help?

I have a chronic blocked and runny nose, possibly due to allergy or chronic sinusitis. Apart from taking antihistamine or nasal sprays, are there any other ways of helping with the condition?

Thank you. I'm at my wits end 🙏 (cross posting as I am desperate)

Nasal spray is quite good I am prescribed mometasone furoate basal spray by GP

I also use a facial steamer as it helps clear my sinuses

I also take allergy tablets - the non drowsy once a day mostly but in bad days you can't beat 4 hourly (up to 4x day) piriton

I have allergies asthma and allergic rhinitis

Thanks for the suggestions. I like the sound of a facial steamer :-)
Probably best for me to go to the Gp too.

Like 3 friends of mine I have chronic rhinosinusitis. We all have different issues that caused it.

Antihistamines don't work. However they are worth trying before going to your GP as many will just prescribe antihistamines and steroid nasal sprays as they will presume it is an allergy until you complain a few times that they don't work.

It's also worth having a dental check up to confirm it isn't caused by any issues with your teeth.

Then once you have excluded those go to your GP and ask for an ENT referral.

Thank you for an excellent advice! I will go to the chemist first thing tomorrow to get antihistamines and steroid nasal spray, and if they don't work I will go and see the GP.

I get regular dental check ups so that's been excluded already

Try a nasal rinse with saline solution

My son has chronic sinusitis and is unable to use medicated nose sprays so rinses twice a day (no later than 1hr before bed) and this gets lots of gunk out

Neil Medd is the brand we use

Get Actifed it's so good

I take Fexofenadine year round (I'm prescribed it). That plus beconase are the only way.

Sorry it's antihistamines and nasal sprays but they are the answer.

You could possibly get some blood tests done and find out if you e.g. have a dust mite allergy. I do but I'm not prepared to refloor my entire house so it wasn't the most useful thing to find out.

Try neti pot (available on Amazon). You rinse with sterile saline - hard to describe but you literally pour into one side of your nose (over a sink) and it comes out the other nostril. Watch a video and you will see what I mean. I was skeptical but its the only thing that helped with covid related sinus problems. Soothing and certainly shifts gunk!

Thanks all!

@Remmy123
Actifed really works for me but don't feel it's great for my body so was looking for something else..

@Augend23 I was prescribed fexofenadine once (it might have even be for nasal congestion) but don't think it worked that well. Allergy test sounds like a good idea.

@tarmum hadn't heard of Neti pot but looks amazing. Is it for everyday use, what happens if you stop using it - are you back to square one? I think I'd like to try this out before going the chemist tomorrow.

I second the sterile water netti pot/nose rinse thing. I have rhinitis and having a blocked nose drives me insane. I use beconase spray once/twice a day and when my sinuses are really blocked I use a sterile water nose spray which is gross but oh... The relief! 😂

lookslikeabombhitit · 28/12/2022 20:59

To add- you can use a netti pot as frequently as you want to.
