if so what helps you? And do you still wear mascara or make up ?

Yes, I was diagnosed with it when I was only 25, which was devastating at the time because it had taken over my life. I had struggled for years with dry eyes and styes and so had actually stopped wearing mascara from being about 19. I wear light makeup now, but no mascara. At 25 I had lipiflow treatment which helped immensely, but was £££. I had previously been put on a long course of antibiotics, but this gave me other nasty side effects. I was told that I would need to repeat lipiflow every couple of years, but I’ve managed to keep on top of it with using a heated eye mask (off amazon) for 20 mins every night and massaging my eyes. 6 years later I forget that I’ve even got it and find the routine of using the eye mask before bed really relaxing.

SnowOwlWise · 28/12/2022 19:00

Hi robin so you would reccomnded the lipiflow then ?
do you keep your eye mask on for 20 rather than 10 ?

also do you follow any particular way or video to do the eye massage
my eyes have already become quite wrinkled

I’m tempted to order a gadget off Amazon called nulids but it’s £300

do you wear contacts ? Or did you ?

I definitely recommend lipiflow if you can afford it. It was life changing for me. Yep, I keep it on for 20 mins, sometimes a bit longer, and then just massage in a downwards motion for top lids and upwards for bottom. I’m fairly young, so wrinkles aren’t an issue for me. I had wondered if the heat and massage would cause them, but I’m completely wrinkly free. I’ve never been able to wear contacts as my eyes are just too dry, which is a bit annoying as I’m very outdoorsy. I haven’t heard of nulids, but I’ll check it out.

When you massage on a downwards motion or it just like running your finger down straight or in a circle type motion ?

i worry about everything and I worry about putting too much pressure on my eye esp after a hot compress

there’s another thing you might wanna check out too peep wand

so sorry you experienced this from such a young age
so do you wear glasses then or is your vision ok ?

Robin223 · 28/12/2022 19:26

I just run the pad of my finger down my eyelid, holding my eyebrow with my other hand. The idea is to move the gunk out of the glands. I wouldn’t worry, I’ve done it for years and my eyes are in good health, mgd aside! Thanks, I’ll have a look. Honestly, it doesn’t really bother me now, although sometimes hormones at certain points in my cycle can make my eyes feel quite dry and I can’t sit at a computer for too long, which I don’t really do in my job anyway. I think I’m just in a routine with it all. I do wear glasses. The only annoyance with it is that I get fed up of the rain when doing all of my outdoorsy hobbies in glasses!

SnowOwlWise · 28/12/2022 19:34

Thanks robin
I’ll try that when I do my compress tonight

And I totally agree about rain on glasses so bloody annoying

Good luck with it! I should have been clearer, the eye mask I use is a plug in one. I used to use the ones that you put in the microwave, but they didn’t stay hot long enough to do much.

LolaMoon · 28/12/2022 19:45

I have it. Along with warm compresses I take my index finger and roll it up underneath my lower lash line which squeezes oil into my eyes. Then I do the opposite downwards on my upper lash. This really works. Like a rolling motion.
Also I squeeze my lids together eyes shut regularly throughout the day. This also helps- you can find these exercises on YouTube.
Also make sure you drink 2L of water a day and eat oily fish (or take an omega oil supplement).
Not tried lipiflow as it’s v expensive and reviews seem mixed.
I still wear mascara with no issues. I use bio oil to remove my makeup every night and this also seems to help.

I also have the peep wand and it’s fabulous- like a lovely massage for your eyes!

I forgot to ask an after the eye massage do you clean the kids and if so what do you ?
as this part seems a bit strange to be that you germs bit of oil flowing then use some sort of lid wipe and wipe it away

At first I thought I had blepharitis. So I started using tea tree bleph wipes etc which seemed to make my eyes even drier and the problem even worse. So I went to see an optician to get my eyes checked. He examined my lashes and said they were immaculately clean and I had no signs of blepharitis at all and instead diagnosed me with MGD. This is an issue with lipid oils not being adequate to prevent tears evaporating rather than an issue with bacteria overgrowth So, what I do now is clean my lids with bio oil , wash my hands and then do the lash massages. I dont wipe my lashes afterwards because there is no need- I dont have bacteria overgrowth, I just need more eye oil as it were! Since Ive been doing this the problem has improved considerably and I think me using quite harsh anti bacterial wipes was making it 100 times worse. Obv, if you do have blepharitis aswell then its probably necessary but I dont. I dont wear glasses or contacts. It was affecting me quite a lot at the beginning- my eyes felt constantly gritty, sore, and it was really uncomfortable, but since I got a proper diagnosis and started this new regime I barely notice it now. I really recommend you go on Youtube and look up MGD videos as there are loads of really helpful exercises on there. There is hope!- once you find something that works for you it can be managed and now I'd say I rarely think about it.
