What does it mean when cutlery suddenly goes rusty in dishwasher/glasses go white?

I don't mean after weeks/months/years but I mean all of a sudden - before Christmas we had a few days when everything was coated in white, so I assumed too much salt, then a lot of rust on the cutlery. We thought it was about to break down as everything was filthy too, having to wash everything again by hand or soak it as there was a sort of "paste" of food particles and maybe dishwasher salt? Anyone had this? Dishwasher is about 2 years old not had this before (although I know glasses go white after a while and things can occasionally rust but not one day everything ok and the next everything spoilt?)

TIA

I’ve had this happen - I’ve fixed it by cleaning all the dishwasher filters, arms etc, refilling salt and rinse aid and running it empty on hottest programme with some cleaner in it (spray kitchen cleaner through, a dishwasher tablet and a v small squirt washing up liquid).

Thank you, done some of that, need to do more. I wondered if it was too much salt being released into each wash?
