A question for sleepy people? Feeling inadequate

So I'm a sleepy person. I need a lot of sleep to function. Regularly have daytime naps.
This Xmas has been stressful, ill child, a million family dos and hosting Xmas Dinner. I just want to sleep all day and do nothing.
I feel like the rest of the world is up and about, socialising, shopping, drinking, walking.

I am so jealous of other people's energy levels!

I've been on anti depressants for many years and not sure if this is a factor.

This does sound like an excessive amount of sleep. Do you exercise? What is your diet like?

QueenSmartypants · 28/12/2022 12:20

I'm the same but I have ME. Have you had your bloods done?

Do you get much exercise? That can help with energy levels

I was the same on anti depressants. I stopped them in February (slowly as per advice) and my energy since coming off completely is sooo different.

Now I have anxiety though. So it's a catch-22 for me.

I'm definitely tireder now I'm on ADs, but they make me feel SO much better mentally that it's something I'm willing to accept.

Have you had your iron/vit D/thyroid checked? Sometimes there's something underlying that goes unnoticed for years.

Other than that, do plenty of exercise and eat healthily. That should help.

I also find that sleeping too much is worse than too little. For example over Christmas, because it's been so cold and dull and we didn't want to put the heating on, we've been having ridiculously massive lie-ins, and when I get up late, I have lower energy for the rest of the day than if I get up early. Try setting an alarm after 8 hours sleep for a week, then 7, then 6 - see if it makes you feel any better.

I found ADs actually made my sleep quality better, but YMMV. Other things that help this sleepy person include little or no sugar and a good amount of protein in my diet, using a sleep calculator to make sure I wake at the end of a sleep cycle, and making myself "good tired" i.e. tired out by long walks or physical activity (I don't do proper exercise though as I hate being sweaty). Heating and lack of fresh air mess me up too, and will send me off to sleep. Weight loss (boring) also gave me much better energy levels.

I was actually coming on here to post a thread asking whether I listen to my body and continue sleeping today or whether I should get up and get shit done. I’ve always been a tired, nap a day person but today and this week takes the cake. I’ll admit that I’m extremely run down though.

I say sleep. Recover. Do what needs to be done. And I need to listen to that advice too.
