Delayed onset broken ankle?

OK, so I know that's not a thing really.

Earlier today I was trying to teach DD to roller-skate. She fell, i went to catch her, and the front of her skate slammed into the front of my ankle. It hurt like buggery for 5 minutes or so, then was fine again.
But about an hour ago, it started really hurting again and now it's fucking agony. I can move it, so I don't think it's actually broken (and also I was running on it earlier) but fuck me, it reeeeaaallly hurts, Mummy. 🥺
Is there anything I can do other than limp about pathetically and swear under my breath? I have taken aspirin too. And chocolate.

I broke my wrist and could still move it, it just hurt a lot! I’d get it checked out

BamBamBilla · 27/12/2022 20:54

I broke my ankle and could still just about walk on it for about a week till I could get it seen. Turned out it was broken after all.

Theala · 27/12/2022 20:56

There was a good three hours or so in between the fall/smashing and when it started hurting again that I forgot about it completely, so it's hardly broken in that case, is it?

I'm not sure the "I can move it so it's not broken" thing is actually real. I broke a thumb and could move it. DP broke his wrist and could move it.

What's the A&E wait times like near you? Or do you have a minor injuries unit close by?

MargaretThursday · 27/12/2022 21:00

Can't guarantee that. The adrenalin can make it seem like that.
I'd get it checked out.

Theala · 27/12/2022 21:07

Nearest A&E is an hour's drive away (we've very rural) although we are going to the city tomorrow anyway.
I was hoping you'd all say it's just bruised muscles "you'll be fine in the morning" though, tbh. I mean, I did the hoovering without a twinge in-between times. 😟

Have a look for a minor injuries in the city and get there at opening. Hopefully they can X-ray quickly and tell you.

Theala · 27/12/2022 21:56

Will go tomorrow if it's still this painful, thanks. I'm currently icing it and DH has given me one of his tramadol so hopefully it'll be feeling better tomorrow.

Poor DD is going to be heartbroken if she has properly injured me, the poor little thing. 😢

Oh no, I know that feeling. My DD would be heartbroken too.

I'd say that I hope it's a nasty sprain but they can take longer to heal than a bad break. I badly sprained my ankle and it took 18 months to heal and is still a differen size to the other one

BendingSpoons · 27/12/2022 22:08

When I was a student I fell over and twisted my ankle. Limped home and decided I was OK to go out that evening. By the time I got home it was absolute agony. Could barely take my jeans off, crawled to the toilet and balancing frozen peas on it was unbearable. I lived 5 mins walk from the hospital but thought I would have to call a taxi in the morning. It was fairly OK in the morning, I'd just overdone it. Fingers crossed yours is better tomorrow!

Nat6999 · 27/12/2022 22:14

Strap it up tonight, ice it & keep it up & if nobetter tomorrow go to A & E.

Oh I know that feeling. DS2 cut me up when we were cycling so I had to do ab emergency stop and went over the handle bars. I broke my elbow and he was absolutely heartbroken.

I also know someone who walked for a few days on a broken ankle before they realised it was broken so its definitely possible its broken.

I sprained mine as well a good few years ago and it was awful! I was on crutches for weeks. I do hope it's not that either!
Although that time it swelled up horribly almost immediately. I only have a slight bit of swelling at the moment, that I had to compare with the other ankle to see.

Thank you all for the advice and sympathies. Fingers crossed it's just muscle contusion and is better tomorrow.

Oh no! Poor you and poor DS! Horrible for you both.

DH fell off a kerb and injured his ankle back in 2006. I told him to go the hospital. Repeatedly. He didnt. He limped around for months and whined about it, and it eventually sorted itself out. Except it didnt really, it just healed badly and causes him pain and locks up now and again to the point where we had to get him an automatic car so he doesnt have to change gear.
I finally convinced him to get it checked out. It took 16 years. And lo and behold, evidence of an old badly healed fracture and bone spurs and wotnot. Dont be 'D'H. Get it checked out...

iknowwheretheothersockgoes · 01/01/2023 14:15

How is your ankle, OP? I just saw another thread about a sore ankle and thought it was yours!

Theala · 01/01/2023 14:36

It's very kind of you to ask, @iknowwheretheothersockgoes . It's much better, thanks. I didn't get it seen to in the end because the next day it wasn't even sore enough to need painkillers so I figured there couldn't be too much wrong with it. It's still a little tender but the swelling is almost gone and I can walk fine on it.
