Take them down on Epiphany, 6th Jan, so the wise men can use the lights to find the baby Jesus. No later than that because the goblins will get in.

Saltywalruss · 27/12/2022 20:40

It really doesn't matter x

NOACF · 27/12/2022 20:41

Supposedly 6th Jan. But I always take mine down by then and have had 3 absolutely shit years in a row so 🤷

Garman · 27/12/2022 20:42

Never because that’s not a thing.

Whataretheodds · 27/12/2022 20:43

Apparently QE2 used to leave them up until Candlemas on 2nd Feb

Heyahun · 27/12/2022 20:43

6th Jan

OldWivesTale · 27/12/2022 20:44

6th Jan - after the 3 wise men have been - is officially when you should take them down.

DaisyWaldron · 27/12/2022 20:45

Candlemas, at the start of February.

TentoFive · 27/12/2022 20:47

Well, it is all bollocks, but before sunset on 5th Jan which is when 12th night starts.

I quite enjoy the pagan ritual of making sure all the greenery out of the house and burning it. Feels quite cleansing.

Parker231 · 27/12/2022 20:47

On whatever date you want - there isn’t a right or wrong date

Choconut · 27/12/2022 20:48

Sadly decorations being up or down have no bearing on anything. I hope you have a lovely year this year anyway though.

gogohmm · 27/12/2022 20:49

6th of Jan for the Christmas ornaments but it's traditional to keep the tree and lights up until candlemas (2nd feb) in the past

Stardustkid · 27/12/2022 20:49

Superstition, just finding out I can’t do washing on New Year’s Day too, I’m wondering what other ones I’ve done and if that could be the cause of my recent misfortunes - ok desperately clutching at straws anything I can do for good luck, it would be lovely to have a peaceful year in 2023

Skyeheather · 27/12/2022 20:50

They are supposed to come down on 12th night, which is the 5th January.......

BUT there's an argument about when 12th night is - it's 6th Jan if you don't count Christmas Day as Night 1, 5th Jan if you count Christmas Day as Night 1.

I take mine down on 5th because I'm superstitious!

That's a nice mixing of different superstitions!Grin

Google says 5th...

Mañanarama · 27/12/2022 21:01

Mine’s coming down on 30th, it’s too fat this year and keeps getting knocked so there are more fallen needles than normal… getting right on my nerves, so it’s going!

Athenen0ctua · 27/12/2022 21:03

Candlemas

givethistokevin · 27/12/2022 21:04

Mine come down on Hogmanay ready for a fresh year

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 27/12/2022 21:05

There is really no such things as bad luck. Put your decorations out and take them down whenever you feel like it.
I take my santa stuff down a few days after Christmas, I take the glittery/Christmassy stuff down mid/end of January, the tree stays up as long as it's alive, the fairy lights all stay out/on until the evenings start to get lighter end of Feb/March.
