i think we’re possibly looking for something that doesn’t exist. Somewhere quite traditional and not touristy but where there are nice beaches with something for the dc to do. We want to hire a holiday home within walking distance from restaurants, shops and beaches but not too busy or built up. Any ideas much appreciated.

Uk or abroad?

northern Irish coast is absolutely beautiful and not too built up

greek islands are quieter off season and lots for kids to do

northern spain or east Italy good too

Sorry I should have said abroad.

We’re hoping to go end of July/August.

Definitely looking for somewhere hot.

What do your DC like doing?
What do you like doing?

We really liked Croatia. Lots of water sports-the DD’s liked jet skiing and parasailing. Lovely beaches. Saw where Game of Thrones was filmed and walked on the walls in Dubrovnik. It is touristy and busy in Dubrovnik but surrounding areas aren’t. And we were near the border with Montenegro so had a day trip driving round Kotor Bay which is gorgeous.

DC and DH like surfing and water sports. I like reading on the beach. We enjoy eating out in nice rustic restaurants and some sightseeing but not too much.

Atlantic coast?

I seem to remember that near Biarritz is good for surfing and water sports. And you can't ever go wrong with France (in my view)

We go to Bavaria and my teens love it.
They like swimming in the lakes and going up into the mountains or occasionally visiting a museum (they were blown away by the Egyptian museum in Munich).
They are Gamer couch potatoes at heart but both really enjoy Bavaria
No beaches apart from at the lakes but no sand or salty water either

When our girls were 16 and 18, we went to Italy, picked up a car, went to the lakes for 3 nights, stayed in an apartment carved out the side of the mountain, which they were very impressed with. We then drove South, stopped at a few places and ended in Tuscany in a villa with a pool for a week. We did so many things and were lucky enough to be in Siena when the Palio was on, that was amazing. We then went to Florence for 2 nights, ended in Venice then home. This was 10 years ago and we still all agree it was the best ever holiday.

I would recommend something like this and if you can get a convertible car even better.

Sorry to derail, but do you have any recommendations for particular accommodation in Bavaria? Quite fancy it for this year.

Portuguese riveara or one of the Greek islands that has water sports - but they can be windy eg Naxos

Just before Covid we stayed with our teens and preteens in a lovely self-catering in Cascais (Portugal). Private garden and pool, billiards table, 10 mins walk from beaches (with showers) and supermarket, 15-20 mins walk from town centre (train station, restaurants, nightlife). Teens had freedom to explore as they wished. I don't remember what beach facilities there were, but we deliberately chose the quieter beach. There would almost certainly have been other beaches with rentals and other facilities. Brilliant trip, would love to go again.

Sorry I dont
we stayed in Leuterhausen (sp?) last summer but I probably wouldn’t stay there again. I suggest you look in the area around Erding
To be honest transport is so reliable and easy that most places are pretty good

Your description made me think of Fiskardo in Kefalonia.

Ericeira in portugal? Pretty fishing village/town with very good surfing beaches surrounding it. Sintra and Lisbon for days out sightseeing
