What can I cook with Gammon?

Boringcookingquestion · 26/12/2022 12:31

I’m hosting a late Christmas get together and have promised my guests a joint of gammon… the only problem is I’m not sure to do alongside it.

I’m planning on a Sunday dinner style meal but have somehow gotten through life without ever eating gammon, except in a pub with pineapple. Do any of you lovely people have any ideas of what side dishes will go nicely?

Merry Christmas!

We had it with dahl on Christmas Eve. That was good.

RewildingAmbridge · 26/12/2022 12:35

Cauliflower cheese, Boulanger potatoes (Delia's recipe is fool proof) and some green veg, I quite like shredded sprouts cooked quickly over a high heat with a little olive oil, you can add various herbs, lemon, chilli whatever takes your fancy or just with salt and pepper is nice

RosalindsAFuckingNightmare · 26/12/2022 12:35

Planning on having ours with leftover Christmas veg bubble and squeak.

I do it with standard roast vegetables, red cabbage and Brussels. Also with pommes dauphinoise.

Drbrowns · 26/12/2022 12:39

Mashed potatoes, green cabbage Cooked lightly in salted boiling water and turned in melted butter, and parsley sauce for the ham.

Fifthtimelucky · 26/12/2022 12:39

I did mine with baked potatoes and parsley sauce.

Iwanttoslowdown · 26/12/2022 12:42

Dauphinois pots are really sumptuous with gammon along with green veg on the side.

ThePoshUns · 26/12/2022 12:43

Potato croquettes, cauliflower cheese, red cabbage

LBOCS2 · 26/12/2022 12:43

I did ours with mashed potato, cauliflower cheese and red cabbage on Christmas Eve.

Spanielsarepainless · 26/12/2022 12:47

Jacket potatoes, cauliflower cheese, braised red cabbage with apples and spices(Delia recipe) and mustard sauce.

blueshoes · 26/12/2022 12:49

If you like sweetcorn (and only if you like sweetcorn), Nigella's Sweetcorn pudding: cookingwithnigella.com/2019/11/05/corn-pudding/. Dead easy to make.

If you cannot get creamed corn (they come in tins), then normal sweet corn will do, I think. It will just be less smooth and more lumpy.

EllaPaella · 26/12/2022 12:57

Red cabbage, Cauliflower Cheese, sweet potato mash, Roast spuds, green beans and roast carrots. I love gammon.

MrsBrandonspiano · 26/12/2022 13:00

I like gammon in buttered white bread and smothered in English mustard.

Mirabai · 26/12/2022 13:01

Who are all these people eating cauliflower cheese at Christmas. It’s an abomination I tell you.

tealandteal · 26/12/2022 13:02

Whatever you like with a normal roast really. I like mine with a honey mustard glaze and mash but no one else here likes mash so usually have with roast potatoes.

Notoironing · 26/12/2022 13:03

Slight thread hijack

is a ham joint from the butchers ready to eat or does it need to be cooked?

Cactusprick · 26/12/2022 13:06

Mac n cheese & peas

Thelnebriati · 26/12/2022 13:33

Cook it in cola, the cheap supermarket on works best. The flavour is sublime.

@Notoironing the butcher should have told you when you bought it as they can be ready to cook or ready to eat!

Notoironing · 26/12/2022 13:46

I didn’t buy it, my fil did - he says it’s ready to cook it just doesn’t look appetising and I never heard of just opening an entire joint and serving!

Tallulasdancingshoes · 26/12/2022 13:54

I’ve be done roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese and green beans before. It was really nice.

Mirabai · 26/12/2022 13:56

Best way to cook gammon is 1. Soak it for a couple of days to get some of the salt out 2. Simmer it with 1 onion, 1 carrot until cooked through. 3. Roast for 30-40 mins on the day.

TenThousandSpoons · 26/12/2022 13:57

Definitely cauliflower cheese

plus roast potatoes and any other veg you fancy

Clutterbugsmum · 26/12/2022 13:57

I roasted mine with a honey, mustard and orange glaze and serve with normal roast dinner sides.

But have also done with cauliflower cheese. With butter pasta and salad.

Mirabai · 26/12/2022 13:57

Many people swear by Nigella’s ham in Coca Cola but I have my own recipe I prefer.

Dodecaheidyin · 26/12/2022 14:09

Leeks.
