I have 3 kids... 11, 9 and 8. We had a nice day yesterday. However, in the morning one small toy broke belonging to my nine year old boy. He accidentally knocked it off table and it broke.

I cleaned it up and said I would replace it when the shops open in a few days. He was upset for about an hour - kept saying he wanted to go to shop straight away, etc.

Anyway, he moved on from that but last night going to bed he got upset again - saying Christmas wasn't good this year as he hadn't gotten many presents and they weren't very good.

I took a lot of care to make sure the kids had roughly similar amounts of presents. A few of his things looked small but they were pricey. He got what he has asked for.

He worked himself up last night and we both ended up upset...said that Christmas was ruined and that he was so disappointed by it. He spent an hour having a sort of tantrum where he shouted and cried. He never apologises for anything and so I am feeling very flat this morning. When he comes down he'll probably just carry on as normal but I feel like crying. If I bring it up I risk him starting again and ruining today.

I never have problems like this with the other 2.. I hate that they are hearing him loudly complaining about his presents. I don't want him to start up again about it today so I suppose we'll just carry on as normal. But I feel so sad today.

Sounds like he was overwhelmed. He needs a walk in the fresh air today,

I would wait until he’s calmer then talk about why he was upset.

Help him to understand that we don’t always get what we want and presents are expensive, especially this year when everything is more expensive than last year.

Help him to understand that Christmas isn’t just about presents.
