Bought all my delicious Christmas food. Been prepping lunch for tomorrow all day. Felt a bit of a cold coming on, had a lemsip, ran a nice bath with my Lush bubble bar I bought myself....I can't smell it. Shit. Smell some other bits and pieces in the bathroom...nada.
Half an hour later, I realise I now can't taste. Covid I'm guessing, no tests at my disposal so I will just have to safely assume.
Could this happen at a worse time?! The meats, the gravy, the stuffing, the desserts, the cheeses...I won't be able to taste any of it!! What a waste of money! I've been looking forward to this meal for weeks and now I will have to take my kids word on how good it tastes while I chew tasteless mouthfuls 😩
First world problem I know but very disappointing considering I've been scrimping and saving to buy nice things I enjoy for this week and have restrained myself from eating it sooner! More fool me!!

Can you freeze a plates worth and have it once your taste comes back?

Fireandflight · 24/12/2022 20:39

Oh you poor thing! Covid is shit at any time but Christmas Eve is the pits. Sending hugs.

Sympathies OP - I tested positive at lunchtime today too. Bah humbug

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/12/2022 20:42

I know - it's shit. I don't have COVID (numerous tests) but a stinking cold, and can't taste a thing.

Top tip: chili olives are still good, as your tongue registers the salt and heat.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 24/12/2022 21:28

I feel your pain 😫 i also have covid and can’t taste much at all…tiny hints of flavour coming through 😭.

Enjoy your dinner in a week or two when you can taste it 😆.

MaryJean87 · 24/12/2022 22:07

Hope you feel better soon. Last time I had covid I only lost my sense of taste and smell for a few hours. I got up in the morning and it was back.

dontgobaconmyheart · 24/12/2022 23:36

This has also happened to me OP, tested positive yesterday- I think, feel so awful I've lost the plot date-wise. I can very faintly taste some things but most things all taste the same. I only noticed when I 'cooked' a pot noodle ( too ill to do anything else) and thought "this is even more bland than I remember" before the penny dropped.

It's so infuriating, and I'm annoyed at the waste of money too. The only thing that makes me feel remotely better is that I've felt so rough all week that I didn't buy myself a lot of the fresh food I normally would treat myself to as I've had limited appetite and have been feeling sick when I eat so held off. Instead I bought a shed load of lovely biscuits, chocolatey bits and cupboard nibbles which I'll be staring at longingly until my bloody taste comes back.

Get well soon everyone, we will have our time! I am pencilling in New Year for an epic and shameless feast, even if I have to do it at home by myself.

ShirleyValentin3 · 25/12/2022 00:40

I tested positive a few weeks ago and still haven't got my taste back. Everything tastes like metal 😩

Feeling a bit sorry for myself over here too! Hope your taste and smell returns soon op!

Pismascrescents · 25/12/2022 07:55

OP you might not not get it too badly. We have had a virus looming but it never actually hit- slight sniffles and pain but no more.

Saucery · 25/12/2022 08:01

I cried in front of the cheese in the fridge last night. Actual tantrummy sobs.
Yes, I can have cheese any time I like. Yes, this cheese will last until I’m better.
But this was Christmas Eve Cheese goddammit!

Christmas Colds/Covid suck [Xmas Angry
I worked through an entire term while colleagues succumbed all around me. I did extra cover and patted myself on the back for having a tip top immune system. Then WHAM , the bastard hit me in the middle of this week. Next year I am going to let children sneeze on me mid-Dec then it’ll be over before Christmas.

Seconded.

mondaytosunday · 25/12/2022 12:24

Sympathy! Pregnancy 'ruined' two of my Christmases - was nauseous all day, and it's my favourite meal of the year.
My sister had never regained her sense of smell or taste from catching covid March 2020! She's a keen cook and baker too.

Deathraystare · 25/12/2022 12:47

Just think how lovely the cheese will be when you can taste it!

quicklybeendrivenmad · 25/12/2022 12:55

Yep covid hit us feel crap really bad sore throat but prosecco is helping cool it down and not remotely looking forward to all the nice food.
