I could have got the whole Christmas meal in Waitrose this afternoon...

Dd and I went for a walk this afternoon and ended up in the local Waitrose to get a couple of bits.

Whilst in there i saw they were reducing loads of stuff, including turkeys (£30 for one originally £75!) I realised I could have bought everything in there this afternoon including turkey, pigs in blankets, veg, potatoes etc, most of which were half to a quarter of the original price! Plus booze, desserts and the extras!

If I were catering for guests I wouldn't risk it but I'm seriously considering buying it all last minute next year!

Yes we found the same. We ordered ours from the farm 0.5 miles from us but found we could have save £30 if we’d bought from Waitrose. It’s always a gamble.

We always do this. So did my mil. I cannot fathom why people order turkeys for £££. Well in fact we got the hello fresh Christmas box this year and they didn’t deliver some of it - so we went last minute shopping anyway. All fine. Even if you have guests, they aren’t royalty and would presumably just eat any food. Several times we have substituted chicken for Turkey as the Turkey is stupidly priced. This year we got a Tesco Turkey for £14 to feed 6 and I considered that price ok.

Same when I picked up
my M&S order late this morning.

Next year I might buy a chicken, just in case, and seriously go last minute to get a half price turkey! If they don't have any we will just have the chicken, if they do have turkey I'll just freeze the chicken!

I did get some breaded fish for £1.25 reduced from £5, some organic (we never buy organic) sausages for £1 reduced from £4, raspberries for 49p reduced from £3! It was great! Lots for the freezer at least.

I’ve just been to M&S before it closed and they had everything. Including their £100 turkeys reduced to £25.

MerryChristmasToYou · 24/12/2022 18:41

Just be a bit more flexible with your must-haves. I'm not having a traditional Christmas meal, but there were things that had all sold out in my local supermarket. I'd made sure I had those.

IntentionalError · 24/12/2022 18:41

I remember one year popping into Sainsburys on Christmas Eve afternoon and the manager was standing at the front of the store giving away bags of vegetables for free just to get rid of them. He had pallets of the stuff which had to go.

MerryChristmasToYou · 24/12/2022 18:42

I got something reduced from £4 for 41p, and many similar bargains.

thelionthewitchtheaudacityofTHISbitch · 24/12/2022 18:42

I think the supermarkets have overstocked this year - hoping for a good Christmas. The shelves have looked full to over-flowing with typical "Christmas" specials. Perhaps not veggie/vegan/gluten-free etc. But the usual treat stuff. (South-East)

BluebirdRobin · 24/12/2022 18:57

I must admit the supermarkets appear to have overstocked the last few weeks. Which is an odd contrast to the threads by people saying they haven't had all of their festive food delivered/substitutions 🤔

I’ve found that for the last few years that the supermarkets have excellent stock levels in the run up to Christmas but I guess that does mean they have lots left over. There’s definitely no need to panic buy.

Westfacing · 24/12/2022 19:06

So many warnings over the past few months on how there will be a shortage of turkeys.

Yesterday M&S was overflowing with free range turkeys/crowns, all the trimmings, hams, everything!

I hope some of you got a few bargains today!

Our Asda were giving away carrots, parsnips and broccoli for free this afternoon
