Coughed over by someone in supermarket

Just a rant really. This morning I nipped into my local Tesco Express for a few bits. Narrow aisles so not easy to 'overtake' especially with staff loading shelves etc.

There was an older man walking slowly in front of me in the aisle, who then stopped just as I walked past him and did the loudest, most phlegmy, disgusting chesty cough I've ever heard. Didn't cover his mouth.

He then stood next to me at a shelf a bit further up and did it again 🤢 I covered my mouth and nose with the collar of my jacket and moved on.

Worried I am now possibly going to catch whatever germs he was coughing up 😬

If it’s phlegmy it’s less likely to be infectious I would think? More likely a long term condition or the tail end of a cold or a bacterial infection.

Maybe go and have a Dettol bath....as Mumsnet seemed approve them the other day.

Covering a cough should be a reflex really… trouble is if you’ve been plagued with a nasty cough for ages (they really can drag on for weeks can’t they) sometimes it just becomes such the norm for you that it becomes akin to breathing and you don’t even realise you’re doing it. Its possible he wasn’t even aware.

Unless you’re immunosuppressed, I wouldn’t worry too much, your immune system should do it’s thing.

I feel you. Someone coughed in my face in a shop yesterday. I felt spittle.

I'll not say what thoughts went through my head Angry

holierthanthou73 · 24/12/2022 12:16

I would have said something like shouldn’t you have a mask on! Gross !

Jingles0 · 24/12/2022 12:47

This is why I’ve worn a mask in the shops for the past few days!

I know it won’t protect me fully but I didn’t want to be ill over Xmas and I know how grim some other people can be.

Chances are it’s just a smokers cough or something and hopefully you won’t get ill over Xmas.

I work with SEND students and I swear they literally come over just to cough or sneeze in your face (usually wait until you are yawning or laughing open mouthed too 🤢) so I usually pick up everything going!
So I’ve tried to be extra careful when in the shops knowing how many bugs are going around.

BCBird · 24/12/2022 12:49

It winds me up. It courtesy and should be automatic to cover your face.

middleager · 24/12/2022 12:55

I'm currently coming out of this nasty flu type bug. I've had a hacking cough (now phlegmy).
There is no excuse for not covering your mouth and coughing over others.
