What shops or brands did you think were posh, but now doubt yourself

For me it is Habitat. As a teen I thought it was the epitome of home styling the shops looks so expensive. I only had a paper round for income then so it WAS expensive!

but now it is just a brand you buy in Sainburys. They make my big standard - but very much liked - tea lights.

@Tilllly, landed gentleman weekend/farmers, weekday stockbrokers, who have a fondness for brightly coloured corduroy trousers and Barbour jackets for weekend wear at their place in the country. Often to be found in market towns within 2 hours' drive of London.

😂😂😂

Gotcha!!

Booths knocks Waitrose into a cocked hat.

Booths is the finest supermarket in UK.

Choconut · 23/12/2022 19:12

I love our Waitrose, the only place I can get chicken that's not pumped full of water.
Everything gets bought up by the huge brands, like Nestle, Pepsico, Cocacola, and then ruined. Nestle alone has 2000 brands. It's such a shame.

My local booths is an absolute bloody dump. Went to the one in Lytham up the road and was in awe. How come theirs is so lovely when ours is a dive?! 🤣

EmergentThoughts · 23/12/2022 19:35

Yes, I've been inside a terrible Booths once. I now only go to the one in Ormskirk.

whoamI00 · 23/12/2022 19:36

Not posh but Jigsaw

TenzingNorgay · 23/12/2022 19:38

Also, in the 80s I thought Whittards was posh.
And then there's Russell and Bromley - does it still exist? Ludicrous shop. I worked in one as a student.

Russell & Bromley still exist and are quite expensive and fairly posh - although they've started sticking external labels on their shoes which is a bad sign - so I'd say on their way down.

Coxspurplepippin · 23/12/2022 19:44

red trousers by the inestimable John Finnemore

I had a Habitat chicken brick back in the day.
Laura Ashley, Next, M&S - quality of the clothes used to be amazing. My wedding dress came from Laura Ashley's sale and cost £30.

Lemonlady22 · 23/12/2022 19:44

Ton Sur Ton clothes…thought I was the bees knees in the 80s wearing this

I always though the Ivy was posh, it's definitely not.

Baylis and Harding is very cheap. It’s like a pound for soap or four quid for a gift set. I’m also confused by that post.

It’s really not that confusing. I used to think Bayliss and Harding was posh. It isn’t. I thought from memory that it was more expensive than it actually is.
That’s, about it!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/12/2022 15:46

Habitat was expensive but it was really good.

l now think it’s really expensive for what it is.

l used to think Boden was posh. Now it’s not.

Wasn’t it posh then it was bought by IKEA?

walnutmarzipan · 23/12/2022 19:57

In general a lot of brands used to be much better. I reckon it's all to do with them being sold on and the new buyers not upholding the original passion for the quality.

Karen Millen used to be the height of luxury in the 90s - it's now been taken over a few times and the quality is dreadful. I think at one point they bought some Oasis merch and stuck KM labels on it.

Agree that Next quality has gone downhill too, though it was never amazing to begin with.

Addymontgomeryfan · 23/12/2022 19:51

I always though the Ivy was posh, it's definitely not.

They've ruined the exclusivity by opening up a branch in almost every town.

Iamnotausername · 23/12/2022 20:07

VO5 bought in Boots was definitely posher than the V05 sold in Superdrug.

Lightsbonaza · 23/12/2022 20:07

For anyone interested in Waitrose..

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001dnm3

There was an Interview on Women’s Hour with Dame Sharon White - the first ever female chair of John Lewis Partnership and recently named most influential black person in the UK 2023 Powerlist.

she talks about their rather unique business model. I don’t think of Waitrose as posh per say. But it’s definitely more expensive than the Sainsbury’s near by. I will shop in Waitrose though as long I can afford to as I much prefer the way they treat their staff, their business model and their supply chain ethical management.

curlymom · 23/12/2022 20:12

Most of my thoughts have been mentioned.

im now so curious about Booths. Im a shopping snob and want to shop there but never heard if it 😂

Borborygmus · 23/12/2022 20:12

A friend bought a Habitat sofa back in the 70s. It turned out to be poorly made crap, and I resolved never to buy anything there myself.

user1964097 · 23/12/2022 20:12

I wouldn't say our Waitrose was posh, ours hasn't got any red trousers types, they wouldn't come to our town. The floor is always clean though, it isn't in a lot of supermarkets.

I also went into Flannels today, it didn't seem that posh, I guess because the clientele in there were probably just the locals, there was a lot of Burberry stuff in there, I was actually searching for Barbour but that was in the cheaper bit.
