I want to cook my own ham but what is the exact name of the meat I need to buy? Unsmoked gammon raw?

Un smoked gammon raw...is this what I need to buy?

So I can then baste it myself and cook it.

With I think.... treacle, and Apple cider vinegar and honey?

Cut and pasted:
Gammon and Ham: What's the difference?
The answer is – not much! Both of these delicious and versatile cuts are taken from the pig’s hind legs. Gammon is meat that has been cured (by being salted, brined or smoked) and sold raw, whereas Ham is meat that has been dry-cured or cooked, and is sold ready to eat. In a nutshell; when you’ve cooked your Gammon, it becomes Ham.

Home made ham is the best OP!

Wonderful!
So it's definitely unsmoked gammon

Depends if you want it smoked or not.
I prefer non smoked but that's just my preference.
I love home cooked ham. Especially cold the day after cooking.

I tend to get unsmoked gammon, otherwise it's a bit salty for us. Mine is on the hob now. Boiled in cola, then a treacle, mustard and sugar glaze (Nigella recipe).

I always buy unsmoked if I'm making it with another flavour (coke or cider).

I always soak the gammon to reduce the salt content, changing the water occasionally. I've soaked it up to 24 hours and had great results.

Yes, it's unsmoked gammon you need.

Slow cook mine in cola for boxing day 😋

Oblomov22 · 23/12/2022 10:06

Yes. You need it raw. Something that looks a bit like this:

Yes always the Nigella recipe! It goes down a treat although the price of full fat Coke (which it needs to cook) these days is outrageous.

Brilliant!!
