If you're ill at the moment, have you had your flu jab?

Just curious. DD is quite ill, I suspect flu. She is having her jab in January 🙄 (not COVID, I tested her)

I'm also feeling ill. A bad cold at the moment but I'm dreading it getting worse for Christmas day. I've had the jab.

If you've had the jab, are you still really ill with whatevers going round or has it made a difference?

DH missed his flu jab (had his covid but the line for flu was too long) he got flu when it was going round one of his wards at work. Definitely flu - as they test for it.
He was quite poorly. He passed it on to DS, who has only had his flu jab this week (timings on school scheme) so didn't benefit from it this time. DS was less I'll than DH but still not great.
I, however had my flu jab, I'm fine and didn't catch a thing from either of them despite being immunosuppressed.
Who knows if it helped but on balance of probability it seems it did.

I had flu jab and Covid booster and still got the flu-type thing going around. Never been so ill!

I think we have RSV caught from DGS. Neither of us as ever had a flu jab.

My friend who had the flu jab ended up in hospital on a ventilator with flu last month.

She was told she would have died before even reaching hospital if she hadn't been jabbed

The flu jab protects, but not always 100%, like any immunisation. You can still get flu if you are jabbed, but it wont be so bad. But in many cases, it does give you total immunity- you just cant rely on that though

WHy would you not get the flu ab every year?I dont understand why this is on offer, and people dont bother to take it up! Even when you pay, it is worth it

I know of two people absolutely wiped out by flu, neither had the jab.
I had the jab but I currently have COVID, under 50 no jab however that's fine as it's been very negligible.

littlestowl · 23/12/2022 09:11

It also depends on how effective the flu jab is each year - so how well matched to the strains in circulation are the strains in the jab. I’m not sure if the info on that is out for this year ( I know it’s always done properly retrospectively but usually also an early indication).

LucyWhipple · 23/12/2022 09:14

I haven’t had the jab but have been less ill with the same bug that everyone at work had, as other people who I know have had the jab. However, that’s because I’m 10+ years younger than those people, very fit & healthy etc ie there are other factors at play.

likewise with the covid jab - I’ve had fewer than other people that had covid at the same time but I was less ill…but that’s because of other risk factors going on for those people.

Another one here who has had the jab but has still caught this horrible plague that's going round.

Cannot remember being so poorly in a long time and all I want to do is sleep.

I didn't have time to book mine (not eligible for a free one under NHS criteria so quite hard to get an appointment), and have been very ill with suspected flu for 9 days now. I'm slowly getting better, but still no proper appetite, lots of coughing and feeling cold while sweating at the same time, especially on my feet. I was bed-ridden for 5 days and have had to cancel all of my pre-Christmas plans. The rest of the family got it too to varying degrees, but my son, who's had full protection from his flu jab in October, was the only one not so sick that he had to stay at home.

MissMarplesNiece · 23/12/2022 09:25

I've had flu jab (& my covid boosters are up to date) but I've still had this virus that's doing the rounds. The actual illness part wasn't much worse than a bad cold but I've been left feeling so exhausted - breathless, weakness, total fatigue. And, strangely a craving for sweet, fizzy drinks - something I never normally have. I attempted a Tesco shop yesterday, I was in the store about 10 minutes & had to leave before I collapsed.

Interesting, thanks everyone. Guess I'll just keep taking paracetamol and hope for the best 🤞🏻
