How have you hurt yourself while you were sleeping?

Woke up this morning with a pain in my neck (not DD for a change)

I am assuming I've just slept in an odd position but I can't quite believe I'm in so much pain from being asleep.

What random injuries have you woken up with?

A black eye when DH smacked me during a nightmare. We are now in separate rooms.

barbrahunter · 23/12/2022 08:52

well, not really an injury but I once managed to knock over my glass over water on the bedside cabinet while I was moving my arm in my sleep, and it went all over my head.

DinosApple · 23/12/2022 09:01

Fell asleep on my back with my phone propped up on my boobs and duvet. Phone slipped and bopped me on the chin. Ow!

Sometimes I fall asleep and raise one arm in my sleep. More than once I've woken myself up punching myself in the face as my arm falls. Dangerous sport sleeping!

DD fell out of bed face first whilst sleeping when she was 3, smacked her mouth hard off the floor, bit through her lip, knocked two teeth loose, blood everywhere, banged her head hard enough to give herself concussion, refused to eat or drink because her mouth hurt and ended up hospitalised on a drip through dehydration. On my birthday. That was fun. They said she might have permanently damaged her front teeth but her adult teeth are perfect.

TribeD · 23/12/2022 09:06

It's a very dangerous sport! 😳

I'm fine if I don't move, but obviously that's not really an option today. Thankfully DH is off today so his list of things to do has just doubled.

I don't think I'll be able to go and do the food shopping, that's gonna be fun for him ha ha

oh bless her. I feel like a right whinge bag in comparison to her injuries.

Also neck pain. It was because I fell asleep watching films on my iPad when I was propped up by a hundred pillows meaning my neck was at a weird angle.

romdowa · 23/12/2022 09:09

I've eds and joints pop in and out I'm my sleep all the time. I never know what way I'll wake up

Slothmomma · 23/12/2022 09:10

I cut and bruised the corner of my eye by stabbing myself with my nails whilst sleeping - which obviously woke me 😄

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 23/12/2022 09:10

I’m always doing what you’ve done - several times a month! A hot shower usually sorts it out, followed by a couple of paracetamol, and the residue is gone in a couple of days.

My best one was somehow hyperextending my thumb in my sleep. I had to go to minor injuries and have it strapped from wrist to tip. Couldn’t drive, type or mouse for a week! (Or chop veg etc). Despite the pain it was a nice enforced rest.

EllieSattler · 23/12/2022 09:12

Don't worry, same DD slept funny last night, had a slightly achy neck this morning and has banged on about it so much you'd think her head was about to fall off 😀

shiningcuckoo · 23/12/2022 09:31

Fell out of bed once. Had jet lag and I was sleeping in my mums bed. Mum had died in hospital two days before and I was very confused. Big black eye - hit myself on the bedside table. When I was pregnant I rolled onto a wasp whilst asleep. Arm like a balloon.

PuttingDownRoots · 23/12/2022 09:35

I have been kicked out of bed (literally) by my younger DD. She rotates in her sleep so is across the pillow end ot lengthways. Ending with a well aimed kick to my back.

Its a super king sized bed she shres with me when relatives are visiting.

Stag82 · 23/12/2022 09:36

As a child I split my eye brow open on a bedside table. Very scary for my Mum to wake up to me screaming!

wonkylegs · 23/12/2022 09:37

I've had the odd cricked neck but DH is a master for injuries whilst sleeping
When he's stressed he has vivid dreams and jumps up out of bed.
He's had 6 stitches to his forehead from one injury (bedside table), has a scar on his bicep (belt clasp that was near the bed), loads of bruises. He's also broken 4 beds (one he pulled the leg off as he was convinced in his dream it was falling through the floor and he had to stop it), a laundry hamper (he ended up standing in it - I have no idea why) and more bedside lights and water glasses than I care to count.
He once grabbed me to save me from falling so hard I had grip marks but usually I wake up pretty quickly and move.
It's hereditary though both his father and grandfather did similar things and my eldest Ds sleep walks and talks.

SophiaPetrillo1905 · 23/12/2022 09:45

I've broken ribs falling/ jumping out of bed with night terrors.
Dropped my kindle on my face as I feel asleep holding it. Bruised my eyes/ nose doing that a few times!
Concussed myself on my dressing table (again jumping out of bed during a night terror!).
I'm not even clumsy in real life but sleeping is extremely dangerous for me 😳

TribeD · 23/12/2022 09:50

List of things I can't do this morning:
put my knickers on,
brush my hair,
stop DD and DDog from tornadoing around the house

Send Baileys.

Woke up and duvet had moved down so grabbed it to pull it up swiftly and punched myself in the face 😂

Epilepsy · 23/12/2022 09:58

@EllieSattler your poor DD!

@wonkylegs do you and your DH have separate rooms, or beds at least?

I have sleeping/waking epilepsy so have lost count of injuries. Even with as much bed protection as possible it's the seizure activity that is dangerous. I'm a master at hitting myself in the face Hmm so also get a lot of split lips and bruises. It's obvious that a lot of people assume DH is responsible, which isn't great.

Also a master at dropping my Kindle on my face and sadly I'm awake for that so feel the pain!

InMySpareTime · 23/12/2022 10:01

I once woke up on my front in bed with two dead arms under me.
Had to wriggle my legs up under me to get enough leverage to lift my head off the pillow as I couldn't use my dead arms.

Another time I woke up feeling cold dead flesh on my face. Tried to push it away with my arm only to find it was my arm, which had gone dead in the night on top of my head.

On balance I think I need to not let my arms go dead so much.

starfishmummy · 23/12/2022 10:02

Bitten my fingers!! I used to be a teeth clencher and would often bite down on my duvet but several times I woke myself up by biting on my hand!!

Peachypips78 · 23/12/2022 10:03

Had a nightmare and jumped out of bed. The wrong way. Into a wall.

I split my forehead open and still have a scar!

MyBooksAndMyCats · 23/12/2022 10:05

Dislocated shoulders, I sleep with my arms up I don't know why and have a condition that means I dislocate. It's a pain in the bum!

Also once my eldest dc was in bed with me and kicked in me in the face and broke my nose. Blush

suka · 23/12/2022 10:08

DD head butted me while we were both asleep and broke my nose! Most unpleasant way of waking up... everrrrr!

Sparklfairy · 23/12/2022 10:14

Not hurt myself but gave myself an awful fright. Fell asleep in an awkward position and gave myself a dead arm from my shoulder to my fingers. I must have turned over and my dead arm landed across my face, bent at the elbow and my hand/fingers sort of curled round under my chin.

I then had a dream that something was in my bed with me wrapping its claws around my face.

I sat bolt upright with a yell, but my arm was still half dead and in my fright I was still clutching my face with my elbow covering one eye. It was so confusing!
