Found a lump....

I've just a lump at the base of my neck. It's quite wide, about the size of a 2p piece, flat, squishy and movable. I know no one can diagnose me over the Internet and I'm going to play fastest finger first for a gp appointment tomorrow morning. Just wondered if it could be something obvious I wouldn't know about.

Feeling very scared.

Have you been unwell recently? My lymph nodes on my neck swell up when i am unwell

Squarerootofpi · 22/12/2022 17:08

It feels spongier than a lymph node. The lymph nodes on the right side of my body have been swollen since childhood and they never go down. This is definitely a new lump.

I've just read that cysts feel soft and movable, and worrying lumps are usually hard. That's reassured me a bit.

My partner had something that sounds very similar (location, squishy, movable), and it turned out to be something not-scary called a thyroglossal cyst. Maybe yours is the same!

NB before he got his diagnosis, they sent him down the 2-week referral cancer pathway, which freaked both of us out, but it proved to be nothing to worry about... just sharing that so that if your GP says 'hmm, unexplained lump - referral is go!', it doesn't necessarily mean anything frightening.

I had one of these about 3 years ago , had a whole battery of tests and they couldn't diagnose anything so the consultant put it down to a virus and it would go in its own time .
It did take about 6 months but it went and never returned.

Essentially could be lots of things. Get an urgent GP appt as you are planning.

Glands in that region can randomly become raised with even the mildest cold virus. Wouldn’t be surprised considering how many nasty bugs are circulating at the moment. Try not to worry. Especially if it’s moveable and not hard and fixed.

Sounds like a lipoma (fatty lump), I have one in my arm the size of a conker!

Do see your GP though for reassurance Flowers

Iamsodonewith2020 · 22/12/2022 17:45

Yes definitely see GP just in case

gogohmm · 22/12/2022 17:47

@WetBandits
Me too, 3 prominent ones. If I win the lottery, that's the first thing I'd spend my money on, hate them, and the mole in my armpit

Hazey19 · 22/12/2022 17:47

I had one of these quite recently, went to the GP who said it wasn’t anything to worry about and it went away eventually. They said it was a pulled muscle which I wasn’t sure about but anyway it’s gone now!

Squarerootofpi · 22/12/2022 17:53

Thank you everyone, good to know others have had the same and it's turned out fine. I purposely tried not to Google too much as it always gives worst case scenario.
