Child with swollen neck on one side

Hi all,

About 2 weeks ago my 5 year old has strep throat which then progressed into scarlet fever. I took him to the doctors Monday as he had a rotten cough which was a bit chesty. He also still has a strawberry tongue. They gave him penicillin which he finished for the strep throat and amoxicillin for the chesty cough and ‘crackle’ which they could hear.

Just now I noticed a lump in his neck on his right hand size.

I have called the GP but as it’s close to Christmas I’m not sure if I’ll get an appointment.

Has anyone experienced this? I know most people wouldn’t panic but when it comes to the children I always fear the worst!

Thanks

I'd be gobsmacked if he didn't have some lymph nodes up in his neck after that.

Yep, this does seem a totally normal response and swollen glands are one of the common symptoms of strep. If they're generally improving I wouldn't worry too much! By all means get it checked out if it's worrying you but it doesn't sound like anything out of the ordinary
