Any other Scottish Power customers with weird smart meters?

Is anyone else's smart meter in home display unit being weird or is it just mine?

Ours has said 69p all day for 2 days running now, though if you look back on the previous day it has a higher value. For example, last night it said 69p used today, then this morning yesterday's amount was showing as £12.58.

I've logged in to my app and the daily usage for 18th, 19th and 20th are all exactly £11.09 with the same split of gas and electric which isn't possible.

I've tried to talk to Scottish Power but their Chat "bot" only gives you fixed options to choose from, none of which apply to "my smart meter might be broken".

So, I'm wondering whether the smart meter has somehow gone wrong, or whether there's just a connection issue? Anyone else having similar issues?!

I'm not with SP, but I don't have an in home display for my meters and my supplier's website doesn't show my gas usage.

Download the Loop app and see what your usage looks like on there

Thanks @NewBootsAndRanty it was more of a technical issue with my display unit.

I reset it for the third time and now we're back to sensible (but unfortunately much higher than 69p) readings.

Heaven help anyone actually needing to contact SP in an emergency though - it's impossible!

Yes we are with Scottish Power and have had issues with our smart meter gadget thingy displaying correctly. The meter itself is working fine. Eventually got through to them on the phone and they told us there is a known fault with the displays which should be sorted in the next month with an update to something. I don't remember the ins and outs, but the takeaway message was that this is happening to lots of people and in most cases will be resolved in the next four weeks with no action needed on our part. We were told to get back in touch after 4 weeks if there was still a problem.

Hello, I’ve been having trouble with octopus, I have a smets1 meter that was installed by ovo. I joined octopus last March and fixed as they offered the cheapest deal as had abit of a shock when my ovo deal was up. With ovo I was always able to see my monetary value on their app. However, octopus only shows kwh usage on their app. I’ve tried and tried to no avail to ask if they can put this option on their app and recently they have implemented this, however because I have an old meter and not a smets2 one I can’t have this information. I requested an in home display so I can track it on there and they have told me that I can’t have one as my meter isn’t compatible. They said it’s a smart meter as they can see all the information and take readings so will not change them. Don’t really know where I stand as I can’t not participate in saving sessions that have been going on lately as I don’t have the ihd that would make me qualify and have to either wait for my bill to see what my spend is for the month or break out the calculator and try and work out usages each day from my tariff. I was under the impression that all homes would move to in home displays but this does not seem to be the case and it’s like banging my head against a brick wall. Does anyone know if I just have to accept this or am I being misinformed? With this cost of living crisis it would be handy to have this monetary breakdown so I can physically see where I can cut back by being able to work out what appliance costs what via this ihd device.

I don't have an in home display and use Loop instead

Its accurate enough if you're on a standard rate tariff.

NewBootsAndRanty · 25/01/2023 20:36

Oops, just realised i already posted that upthread 🤦‍♀️

NewBootsAndRanty · 25/01/2023 20:37

Oh and an IHD has no impact on whether you can join savings sessions - I've never had one since several suppliers before Octopus.

NewBootsAndRanty · 25/01/2023 20:40

Last point - if you can tell what you've used in kwh, you can always work the cost out yourself from your unit price.

Thank you for your reply, I have seen this loop app mentioned but I’m rather reluctant to get a third party app. They ask for information such as account number and ap code that I don’t feel comfortable handing over, it’s a shame that a company such as octopus who pride themselves on being one of the big 5 do not offer the same as other companies. It doesn’t sit right that I should have to have another app with no affiliation with them to monitor my usage.
In regards to saving sessions, I’ve not be offered any chance to opt on, this is due to not having an ihd as I’ve been led to believe. Have you been able to join in, not having one of these? May I ask if what meter you have as I am running a smets1

desperadodogface · 25/01/2023 20:52

Theyre awful. And if you message them they just yell you not to rely on the readings. I gave birth on a particular date last year and was in hospital for 2 days. On those 2 days DP was in the house for the first hour of the day, then used the microwave for ten mins in the evening. Beyond that, all lights off and he was fast asleep and our bill was £17.50 per day for those 2 days even though we'd all been out for almost all the day. Scottish power customer service just told us we can't rely on their readings 🙄 Then why give them??

NewBootsAndRanty · 25/01/2023 21:47

I am running a SMETS1 the same kind of meter as you. I have never had an in home display with Octopus. I googled their saving sessions, clicked on the link to sign up, and opt in to each session. That's it.

If you look ar your account online or on the app does it not give you the option to view your usage in half hourly through to yearly intervals? As I said, surely you can work out the cost yourself?
As far as I know they will only break down cost in billed periods/amounts, and that doesn't have the energy price guarantee factored in. If you want something online that will show you real-time spend and not just usage, you might need to just find a new supplier.

NewBootsAndRanty · 25/01/2023 22:37

@Carmy101 octopus.energy/blog/saving-sessions-faqs/ explicitly says you don't need an IHD.
