So, ds13 is playing me his latest playlist, which is full of Oasis, Nirvana, the Pixies, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

It just occurred to me that this is the equivalent of me listening to Jimi Hendrix and The Doors when I was his age.

God I feel old.

Slightly off topic but my 16 year old asked for a cassette player for Xmas, apparently cassettes are now cool 😂 her fave band have issued a casette special edition album 🤷

I love this. We saw a band recently who had only brought tapes to sell.

My son is the only one of us with a record player and was very pleased to inherit his grandad's vinyl (vinyl not LP's!).

My18 year old loves 80's music too, Toto, Tears for Fears, Pet Shop Boys etc etc

@mamaduckbone - I've had very similar feelings, though in my case it was walking around Urban Outfitters looking at all the mesh crop tops, tea dresses and baggy combats and thinking 'This is just like when I'd go around shops in the 90s with my mum and she'd say "Oh, that's just like what we wore in the 60s" at all the retro.' then I thought 'Of course, the 90s are more recent than the 60s were then.... oh hang on, shit, no they weren't' 😭😆

I'm sure urban outfitters just found a few mothballed warehouses from the 90s and decided to put it on the shelves with a massive price tag.

My ds is an 80s kid at heart. He's a little rocker and plays too. His idol is Eddie Van Halen and he loves Ratt, Dokken, IM. He also Ioves 80s films and says he wishes he had grown up in that era. I was born in 1973 and when he talks about those times in an historical context, I feel ancient!

DD likes 90s R&B. She calls it ‘old school R&B’. But it was yesterday! 🤪

RagzRebooted · 21/12/2022 12:54

Mine are all retro too.
DS2 (15) asked for band t shirts for Christmas, Dead Kennedys and MFDoom. DD (12) asked for a Nirvana t shirt. They both listen to the music and DS2 and DS1 play more old stuff on guitar. It is definitely a bonus of the Internet that they can listen to whatever they like and discover so much. Like PP though the headphones mean I rarely know what they're listening to.

I'm another one that impressed my teen by knowing all the words to many Eminem songs. DH is more Dr Dre.

The 90s being 30 years ago has broken my brain today as I'm still (just) in my 30s but I remember the 90s.

@Buzzinwithbez , you may have a point there! 😂

14 YO is only just formulating their music taste having just joined Spotify; I find it fascinating that for their generation it's kind of less about music scenes than it is about the aesthetic - so they might like a bunch of individual songs, maybe from different genres, maybe not even being sure who the artist is, rather than being in a scene.

17YO nephew has moved through Beatles/Monkees obsession, onto 90s indie like The Wedding Present, courtesy of his dad (my brother) ,and is now on a metal phase through his mates!

IndieK1d · 21/12/2022 14:06

I'm currently into 90s music. My taste in music is becoming questionable! One of my favourite bands at the moment is Take That.

Off for a username change as it couldn't be further from the truth ..

mothertrucking · 21/12/2022 14:11

My teen is the same, Oasis are a firm favourite at the minute as are the Arctic Monkeys.

Koalacuddles · 21/12/2022 14:17

ours keeps “introducing” me to cool “new” songs - the latest was wheezer. She’s always a bit miffed when I already know all the words 😭

the 90’s and 60’s thing is crazy! The 60’s seemed so cool and such a long time ago when I was a 90’s teen.

I loved 60s music when I was a teenager in the late 80s, early 90s. The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Dylan, Donovan. I had 60s style black and whites dresses, a 60s bob, watched 60s films, read loads of books about the era and my bedroom had Beatles posters and even a 1963 calendar. I basically rejoined the modern era when Britpop came along!
