Constant tickle or catch in my throat, coughing so much throat is now raw. Chest is hurting but I can’t tell if that’s from coughing or something else.

coughing so hard I’m retching and occasionally wetting myself.

tried vicks on the feet and steam, throat sweets and Difflam. About to gargle with salt water.

anyone got a miracle cure? Please?!

For me a codeine containing cough syrup, vicks vaporub inhalation and sipping lots of water was the only thing that got me through a week of coughing. My ribs still hurt a couple of weeks later. Awful

Yumyummyyum · 20/12/2022 22:45

Tastes horrible but this often works for me: barefeetinthekitchen.com/homemade-cough-remedy/

There are bronchostop pastilles that do suppresss coughs quite well. Apple cider vinegar helped with a strep throat (for a few seconds after each swig).

I hope you feel better soon.

Pholcodine linctus

Alisonscutehairflick · 20/12/2022 23:58

That homemade cough syrup is brilliant @Yumyummyyum i didn’t leave it for a few days obviously but will with the rest of the batch but I had a dose and although I’m still coughing it’s definitely soothed the tickle a bit and made it feel less sore when I’m actually coughing.

im still going to see the GP tomorrow if I can or get a telephone appointment as last time I had this - cough getting better then worse - it was viral turned bacterial and I needed antibiotics - but I’m so so so hopeful I might manage to sleep for a bit now. Hoping I haven’t jinxed it by typing this post out..

A friend swears by a sachet of baby calpol for her coughs. Worth a try?

BathtimeHelp · 21/12/2022 00:10

100% the day/night nurse capsules. Pricey but the only thing that stopped my cough. You could tell when I was on hour 3 of 4 until the next dose!

sunshineandsuddenshowers · 21/12/2022 00:11

Suck dark chocolate really slowly. Costs the back of your throat and soothes it.

Alisonscutehairflick · 21/12/2022 00:23

Spoke a bit too soon, still coughing but not as badly. I’m starting to think it’s in my chest which is why nothing is working for long

Fisherman's friend helps to stave off coughing. I was sceptical but tried it on a recommendation and it worked!

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 21/12/2022 00:36

elderberry based syrups are good (apparently this is for reasons other than the soothing sugaryness).

Accoring to my GP sis, the only thing proven to have medical effect is zinc.

foghead · 21/12/2022 00:38

I've got the same and have been making hot lemon, Clove, ginger and honey.
It is getting better now but that's probably because it's run it's 2 week course.
It's been awful though. I've had a couple of sleepless nights due to coughing so much.
Just ended up binge watching Firefly Girls instead of sleeping.

Nat6999 · 21/12/2022 00:39

Day & Night Nurse, it has something that kills the cough, it is hard to get the Night one at the moment so I just used the day one to get me through covid. Also Vick on the soles of your feet & thick socks, then put some on your neck & chest.

Berlinlover · 21/12/2022 00:45

I suffered for three weeks. I tried several kinds of cough syrup, honey, Fisherman’s friend, etc. My insides were aching from the constant coughing. I went to the doctor Monday morning and was prescribed an antibiotic and a codeine cough syrup. My cough is almost gone and my strength is returning, I’m kicking myself for not going to the doctor sooner.

StateOfTheUterus · 21/12/2022 00:52

Are you breathing through your mouth, or nose? Try not to mouth breathe - the air won’t have been filtered and is more turbulent when it reaches the lungs - increases likelihood of coughing.
If you have something on your chest do a big “huff” rather than a cough to bring it up - as if you were steaming up a mirror. Less harsh on your throat.
Drink loads of water.

VeganFromSveden · 21/12/2022 04:11

If you (hopefully) have some fresh thyme growing, cut off a few sprig’s.
wash them, then place in a mug and pour freshly boiled water over the herbs to infuse then for about 4/5 minutes.
remove the sprigs of thyme, add some cool water to the mug, and then add (best is raw unprocessed) honey to taste.
drink slowly, and breathe the steam in through your nose, as I found it helped to clear my nostrils.
take this concoction maybe three four times a day.
I like to drink this “tea” even when I’ve not got an infection or virus. I find it pleasant, and makes me feel more clear headed.
hope you feel better soon.

Baconand · 21/12/2022 04:16

The last few coughs I’ve had the GP gave me a blue inhaler (I don’t have asthma), but they were absolutely brilliant at calming the cough and opening up airway. I reach for it whenever I have a cough now, see if you can get hold of one.

Breadandbutterandjam · 21/12/2022 07:03

Not talking. At all. For a couple of days. Game changer for me although obviously difficult / interesting with family life.

BogRollBOGOF · 21/12/2022 07:49

Blowing my nose... mine's triggered by nasal drip so relieving my nose helps stop the cough from escalating. It doesn't help that the cough is powerful, makes my eyes water and gets even more flowing.

Startuplife · 21/12/2022 07:51

DP has been driving me mad with his cough. Last night he took two spoonfuls of Benylin dry and tickly cough syrup before bed and didn’t cough once the whole night!

Alisonscutehairflick · 21/12/2022 11:30

Okay so it turned out mine was being caused by a nasty bacterial chest infection so I now have codeine syrup and antibiotics. The codeine syrup is MAGIC.

I think I have this bastard cough. Constant catch / irritation as you describe, complete with pissing self and retching. Did you feel otherwise well in yourself? I'm a bit headachey but don't feel 'ill' as such.

Banoffeepie21 · 05/01/2023 06:11

I have had this since New Year. It’s pretty miserable. Benylin (chesty coughs) has helped quite a bit. I have been struggling to talk too, so work has been interesting. Lots of water on hand and minimal talking.

Banoffeepie21 · 05/01/2023 06:12

I have felt tired but mainly through lack of sleep. I haven’t really needed any other meds.
