Where has 'political music' gone?

Thinking about the Specials today obviously, and UB40, Billy Bragg, people who gave a voice to people at that time. Is there anything like that now? I miss that, especially now, with things as they are.

Paul Heaton does a fair bit.

Listened to The Specials today and felt the same as you, the charts are full of crap compared to the hard hitting messages The Specials managed.

bizzywiththefizzy · 20/12/2022 21:35

Celeb types are too busy with their images today , I think . It's a more media selfish sort of society we now have .

Ineedachangerightnow · 20/12/2022 21:38

There's a lot of political music around across multiple genres.

Paul Heaton as mentioned above (listen to Heatongrad). Sonic Boom Six

AffIt · 20/12/2022 21:50

Are you familiar with Grace Petrie?

Sallytobleroney · 20/12/2022 21:51

Thanks roughtyping I'll listen to them. I like Paul Heaton, but he's been around ages, I was thinking more about new bands coming through.

OP posts:
Sallytobleroney · 20/12/2022 21:51

Thanks Affit I haven't heard of Grace Petrie so will check her out.

The King Blues too. To be honest SBS and KB not particularly new either! Paul Heaton has loads of new music but I get what you mean. Went to see him a couple of weeks ago and he was excellent

RelievedItsOver · 20/12/2022 21:53

An old band but a good one, Rage Against The Machine.

I reckon there would be a lot to listen to in modern punk songs but I havent listened to any in years

RelievedItsOver · 20/12/2022 21:54

That doesnt make sense. What I mean is I havent kept up with it all so there could be modern punk bands or whatever that I just haven't listened to.

user85747 · 20/12/2022 21:56

Muse very much have political undertones in many of their songs. My personal favourite off their most recent album being "We Are Fucking Fucked".

Sallytobleroney · 20/12/2022 21:56

There doesn't seem to be punk bands that are cutting through into the mainstream? the kind of 'voice of a generation' that there used to be.

Stormzy is often political, as is Dave.

Pedallleur · 20/12/2022 22:00

Prob more politics in rap type music also acts are marketed different now.

MoreTeaLessCoffee · 20/12/2022 22:00

There is loads of political MOBO being made right now. Dave, Stormzy, Little Simz, Kojey Radical for example all make protest music. Those are just off the top of my head. You're looking at the wrong genres!

MoreTeaLessCoffee · 20/12/2022 22:01

Cross post with @FourEyesGood :)

Yep!

Also a rapper called Bob Vylan, he's brilliant it's quite rocky

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 20/12/2022 22:02

I was only thinking on Saturday about the political music of the 1980s and remembering it with nostalgia. So many consciously left-wing bands having hits in the top 40. The Thatcher effect.

Xiaoxiong · 20/12/2022 22:03

I heard a political song the other day about climate change but it was from the perspective of a vampire. Oli Frost, "the vampire conspiracy"

Other songs include "the Greta thunberg song" and "the dragon of climate change".

HoHoHowMuch · 20/12/2022 22:04

Check out Grace Petrie's Christmas song. On Facebook, which was reposted from tick tock. I have been humming the chorus for days! Definitely not one to play around kids or those with sensitive dispositions. Lots of her other music is great too.

Frank Turner has some good ones aming non-protest songs.

TotallyOP · 20/12/2022 22:05

I was going to mention Muse's new album as well - it's pretty close to the bone.

megletthesecond · 20/12/2022 22:05

I think Jamie T might be a bit / very political.

Odessafile · 20/12/2022 22:07

Agree re some rap/ hip hop being political. I'm not a connoisseur but DS 2 aged 15 reckons so. Kendrick Lamar apparently ?
