I've broken my front tooth and can't get a dentist's appointment till the New Year!

I'm so upset. I was having lunch today and I felt something weird happening with a front toorh, went to look in the mirror and part of a front tooth had broken off! I went straight to the dentist and they had no appointments free before Xmas, not till the New year. I look so hideous, I feel like I can't leave the house and I'm in dread as to how much it will cost to fix it. So fed up!

You’ve tried 1 dentist? I think you might need to phone every dentist you can find within a reasonable distance.. you can’t live like that for a few weeks really.

I think a new year appointment is bloody good going! Take it

wildeatheart · 20/12/2022 17:58

Call 111 and ask for emergency dentist appointment. Tel the you are in pain with it. They will find you one even if your not registered. They will temporarily fill the tooth. I've done it myself and still have the temporary fill 10 years later. I paid £23 for emergency appointment fee.
Good luck x

I am so sorry . Similar happened to me about 5 years ago . Depending on how much has gone they can build it up with a white composite ( I think it is called that .) I then had a cap because mine was bad . About £400 I think .
Try any dentist , not just your own for the first patch up to keep you going x

Ring around private dentists OP, hopefully they will be able to fit you in.

I have a tooth on a plate. Forgot to put it in b4 I went to the library. Was wearing a mask. If you are worried, wear mask when out. It awful.i.know.

The temp kits from amazon like the one posted upthread are really good. I used a similar one to replace a whole tooth once. It stayed in brilliantly and no one was any the wiser. It saw me through until I was able to get treatment.

Appalonia · 20/12/2022 19:47

I had NO IDEA you could contact other dentists!
Unfortunately I had to pay a £45 deposit to secure an appointment with my dentists so I don't think I can now do that. I'm just so worried about how much it will cost. I've heard that dentists in Budapest are 70% cheaper than in the UK, does anyone have any experience with them? Maybe I should start a new thread about that? I just had scampi and chips for lunch ffs!

That's so rubbish. I lost half my front tooth in April 2020 so i know how you feel.

My dentist popped a bit of composite stuff on it and charged me for a filling and now it's good as new so may not be very expensive.

tulips27 · 20/12/2022 19:50

It depends how much has broken off but a random dentist may be able to do a temporary cap (cap not crown) which would tide you over cosmetically for a few weeks.

vinoandbrie · 20/12/2022 19:50

I’m so sorry 😞 What a shock and how horrid especially at this time of year. Gah! Hugs.

BCBird · 20/12/2022 19:52

When I lost my crown I was eating a crumpet🙈

My crown fell off once when I was away on holiday (in the UK). I bought a repair kit in the chemist and stuck it back on. Went to see my dentist when I returned home. Told me they wouldn't/couldn't pull the crown off and to come back when it fell off again. That was about 4 months later - so the kit provided a pretty good repair.

Appalonia · 20/12/2022 20:15

Wow, maybe I should pop to the chemists to see if they've got something then. Thanks to everyone who's responded, it's really helped me feel a lot better! X

Don't lie. You will get turned away at the door. Stupid advice.

I broke a piece off a bottom front tooth eating smarties-oh the shame! My dentist said it's not an emergency so I could either do private appointments or wait for an NHS one, I think it was 7 weeks away.

Took a private appointment, didn't take too much work, but I still think 7 weeks is too long to wait for a damaged and uncomfortable tooth (it was hurting my tongue and I had a sore).

Why not call around and see if you can get an earlier appointment? Most of us keep a pretty light diary in the days leading upto christmas. Whilst we also take payment upfront for appointments, this is always refunded if a patient cancels with decent notice. Where in the country are you on the off chance I'm local?
