Old student loan from 1990s one cancelled does that mean all?

I have buried all paperwork away to make room in living area for Xmas stuff.

A letter came through with one number on it saying in accordance with section 8 loan is cancelled but I'm sure I took 3 out one each year? Would the whole thing be cancelled or one years loan?

If it's from the 1990s doesn't it expire if you haven't finished paying it off in 25 years?

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 20/12/2022 23:06

As in there were three Numbers on the letter and this has one number .
My sense tells me it's one loan
However people have never mentioned this when they speak of loans written off?
They have not said it was one loan one year then next another loan.

They'd reach 25 years one after the other surely?

NoWordForFluffy · 20/12/2022 23:10

Isn't it 25 years after you drew down the last loan? What years were you at uni?

SnarkyBag · 20/12/2022 23:12

I’m sure they expire 25 years after the last loan so I would imagine they are now all clear. That’s my understanding as mine are set to expire in 2024 and my final year loan was 1999.

SnarkyBag · 20/12/2022 23:13

they can’t expire consecutively or my first loan would have already expired and it hasn’t I had to defer it along with the other two this year

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 21/12/2022 07:20

Ok so it could be the whole lot.

Unfortunately my paperwork is buried at the moment so I was hoping someone who had it cancelled can let me know!
There are 3 Numbers and it only says one hence my worry.

@SnarkyBag thanks

When my 3x loans were cancelled they were all cancelled in the same year in one go. I suspect they wait until the most recent one is 25yo before they cancel any.

I googled it and it says they're cancelled when the youngest one is eligible. You could even look the legislation up, which will tell you.

I had to pay mine, so never got to find out!

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 21/12/2022 07:40

I can't remember the exact date I left that's the problems.

I could never make head nor tail of it all

Why would not all the loans be on the letter?

Can you use the letter to log on and check?

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 21/12/2022 07:47

@CoffeeBoy do you remember the letter? Did they list the numbers of all or just one?

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 21/12/2022 07:49

Silent I'm the older loan but will have a look!
I'm almost too scared to check because I couldn't believe it when I gor the letter yesterday! It felt amazing but then it occurred to me it might not be them all!

SilentShite · 21/12/2022 07:51

I think older loans are included on there. Mine from 97 is, for e.g.

It's got £30 left and I am looking forward to them writing it off Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 21/12/2022 07:53

I sometimes got correspondence with just the oldest reference on.

Were yours all administered by the SLC, or were some with Erudio? You may get separate letters if it's the latter.

I'm fascinated by you not knowing when you left though. How do you forget something like that?!

grafittiartist · 21/12/2022 07:53

I got a letter about mine yesterday too- we must have taken them out at the same time.
I've been sorting it out each year for deferment though, so knew how much I owed.
Just in time for my kids to start theirs!!

FUEWC · 21/12/2022 07:54

Oooooh, the feeling that it’s gone must be lovely! How much was left on it?

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 21/12/2022 07:56

@grafittiartist

Yay!!!! Didn't you find deferrment awufl?

Did you take out more than one loan? How many did it mention on the letter?

No word for flurry.

I'm amazed the other way that someone could retain that information?? A lot of living has been done since then!

I had the letter last week too and last loan was 1997 so 25 years is up.

It also wouldn't let me log into my account so I think that's me clear.

Otherwise it would've wiped at age 50 anyway which is next year.

Bobbybobbins · 21/12/2022 08:00

You could ring them OP- they are quite helpful on the phone.

FunctionalSkills · 21/12/2022 08:06

Wow I feel old now. When the loans started it felt like the loan period was a lifetime. I'm a similar vintage (but happened to pay it off pre kids- none of my post kids work would probably count). It was about 3k in my case.

I have no idea how we will support our kids through uni...

grafittiartist · 21/12/2022 09:37

Yes! Not having to sort out that form every year- thank goodness! Uploading/ downloading so many documents- ha!
I celebrated last night.

So you don't know the years you were at school and then at uni? Or the years you did your exams?

I've done loads of living since then, but I always thought dates like that were burned into people's brains! 🤷‍♀️🤣

Other people's brains are fascinating! 😁
