Atrocious handwriting! Has anyone managed to improve theirs?

My hand writing has never been beautiful but has always been at least legible…until the past year or so. Now I feel that my hands don’t know how to form letters, or if my head knows, the message doesn’t get through to my fingers.
like most people these days my job involves very little writing but a lot of typing so I’m way out of practice.I’ve always had really good manual dexterity, some a lot of fiddly crafty things, but my hands just don’t seem to know what to do any more! No pain or obvious stiffness, but they just don’t know what to do!
Has anyone else who’s experienced this been able to make an improvement? Is it just practice and writing stuff over and over? I don’t feel I can write more than 2 Christmas cards legibly!

Mine's appalling and getting worse and I never thought to link it to my low thyroid.

I agree the right pen makes a big difference. A fine nib makes a difference ti me.I do also love stationary though it's wasted on me.

Would anyone be kind enough to link to a rotating mechanical pencils?

Look for the Uni-ball Kuru Toga.

Look for the Uni-ball Kuru Toga.

I ordered one earlier, along with a fountain pen- I shall report back!

Oh I feel your pain OP! My writing is so bad that I have to joke that it's encrypted.

It didn't improve as a child, even after regular practice.

I've since found out that I'm hypermobile and apparently this is a common symptom. It's not something that I've been able to improve, but I'm a speedy typist, so it's not hindered me too much.

Please report back on the pencil OP — I intend to live my stationery-related fantasies vicariously through you.

@FurryDandelionSeekingMissile thanks!

Another hypermobile person here. I work in a school and even the infant teachers can't read my awful writing!!!! 😂 I get real pain from writing for any length of time too. I am inspired to practice though from this and I think I'll look for a modern calligraphy course too!

I think I must have been off school when they taught handwriting because I still can't do joined up writing. I would love to be able to write as neatly as my mum does, she has beautiful writing.

notimagain · 02/01/2023 00:21

In response to the OP..nope...

Was being chased/kicked etc through school fifty years ago about handwriting, went into a line of work where it didn't matter and quite rightly now still get gripe from family over it...........

Ain't going to improve now.....just live with it..

Handwritingsupport · 02/01/2023 06:48

Notimagain- As an adult you can still improve your handwriting but it does take more time.

It arrived yesterday-along with a fountain pen. I’ve decided to do a practice paragraph every day-the same one so I can hopefully see any improvement!

the pencil does feel good to use, it’s nicely balanced and doesn’t feel too light and flimsy, ut also not too heavy if that makes sense. (Also a stationery addict!)

This is todays effort -just a random passage from a magazine! It’s not horrific, but I consciously really slowed down my speed, and to be honest I could feel where I was wanting to slip into a squiggle, so I think there’s hope!

Thanks for the pencil feedback!

Your handwriting looks good to me, nice and regular and with attractive shapes, and I can read it quite easily — legibility might be slightly better if you could train yourself to put a slightly bigger space between words?

FurryDandelionSeekingMissile · 06/01/2023 14:32

Also I think you need a wider rule, really — your ascenders are very short so they're not causing a problem, but your descenders are dropping into the next line, which causes confusion.

That’s brilliant constructive feedback -thank you!
Ill leave a line between each line of writing next time so I can concentrate on forming the letters rather than making them for the paper!

Yes, it can be awkward trying to get nice, relaxed-looking writing when the lines are constraining your natural style too much.

Good luck on the quest!
