Very swollen tonsils that get more painful every night & ease off in the day, anyone else got this bug?

I just can't shift this bug. I fell ill last Monday. My tonsils are very swollen, they take it in turns which side hurts the most, it's weird. I can feel not too bad in the middle of the day but it always gets worse at night. It's ruining my sleep because I seem to have a hair-trigger in my throat for night-time coughing. It's also causing a lot of reflux. My nose and lungs feel fine. Anyone else got this? I just want to get better.. 😔

I might add, it's given me loud tinnitus too..

I haven't, but my experience is drinking loads and keeping eating (even if you really don't fancy it) really helps you feel more human. Keep drinking into the evening - I wonder if dehydration could be part of the night time problem? Since it's been a week, if it's not improving I would ask for antibiotics, if that is even possible at your GP surgery. Tonsils can get infected with odd bugs, especially in adults. I've had it come and go over several weeks until the 4th lot of antibiotics finally shifted it.

Really cold, still, orange lucozade sport is my go to. It's probably not that different to squash but somehow it cuts through the gunk and stays down really well for me.

Hope you feel better soon.

Have you gone to the GP? I get bad throat infections 2/3 times a year. It obviously depends on whether it's a virus or bacterial infection, but I do more often than not end up with antibodies once a year to shift it.

Things that can help- Difflam spray is very good. Also try kids nurofen liquid, because it helps the swelling in your actual throat. You'll need to work out the dosage, and don't take with other painkillers but it really does work!

I feel for you, my throat is my Achilles and it really is miserable Flowers

Yes! I have this! Started last week - I felt really feavery and achey then my throat started swelling and was a bit white. The swelling has gone down now but it's very red and more painful. During the day with drugs it is just about ok (the aches are gone) but at night its unbearable. I do have a cough with it too and just in the past few hours i've got completely bunged up too so I think it's moving onto the next stage. It also looks like i've got some sores right at the very back of my throat - as in on the actual throat not tonsils. Urghhhh it must be gone!

Same and there seems to be a national shortage of strepsils so I think it’s doing the rounds. My local chemist had empty shelves of most cold medicine and no strepsils in any supermarket. Had to order some on next day delivery from Amazon at double the price.

@Christmasinbed I currently have this. Throat was worse at night and I thought I was imagining the tinnitus.

I'm on the mend but first got the virus on 12 November, then diagnosed with viral tonsillitis, two lots of antibiotics one of which cleared a sinus infection. Now just fighting off the viral tonsillitis that's still there. Slowly getting better. I think it was originally a RSV virus

In Wales we have pharmacies that can do throat swabs and give you antibiotics if necessary.

Hughsrunning · 19/12/2022 22:31

Drink lots of fluids - the air is very dry at the moment. I found sucking wine gums or Werther's originals helpful. (For the love of God don't choose sugar free, particularly gummi bears)
I am really shattered.

Hope it's not as long for you.

I’ve had a sore throat only at night for a couple of weeks now. It feels irritated and a little sore at night, then by morning I’m in agony and have completely lost my my voice. It clears up almost completely a few hours into the day. I googled it and it said that it’s probably the dry winter air that’s causing it, and to stay hydrated and buy a humidifier🤷🏻‍♀️

mewkins · 19/12/2022 22:37

How painful is it? The only time I had that it turned out to be quinsy and I needed a night in hospital on intravenous antibiotics. If it doesn't get better and it doesn't feel normal I would go to urgent care.

Buzzinwithbez · 19/12/2022 22:44

I had the same. Very strange how it swapped sides and disappeared for hours at a time.
I drank yogi throat comfort tea. It has thyme in which is meant to be helpful against strep a.

Took vitamin c and zinc too and cut out dairy and sugar.

You've just described my symptoms to a T. I'm fed up with feeling grotty.

Same here - throat is right up there with being as painful as I can remember. Started overnight last Monday, absolutely freezing but had a temperature. Now feel a build up of pressure in my ears (sounds like a marching band)

Reassuringly the GP said my tonsils looked ok, which is a miracle considering I had them out 3 and a half decades ago

Newmama29 · 19/12/2022 23:24

Yes this has been my problem for the last few weeks! I seen the practice nurse today who thinks I may have a post nasal drip with lots of mucus at the back of my throat which is causing the pain, swelling & irritable cough. She has prescribed me a steroid nasal spray so hopefully that helps!

ohfourfoxache · 19/12/2022 23:25

Also finding I’m absolutely KNACKERED - I slept for 18 out of 24 hours last Monday 😱
