Way of turning lamp off after I go to sleep

I don't know what's wrong with me ATM, I just been ill so maybe that's the reason but I keep on falling asleep with the lights on and weirdly I'm out for the count, I'm in a really deep sleep. The problem is I fall asleep with my lamp on which obviously is a waste of electricity and not good for sleeping either. I used to wake up and turn it off but I'm just not doing these days.

Is there a switch or something that would turn my lamp off automatically about an hour after I go to bed?

You could get a timer plug which only allows the lamp to be on during times you set.

HowVeryBizarre · 19/12/2022 11:48

Yes, you can get a timer that you plug the lamp plug into that would do that.

tulips27 · 19/12/2022 11:49

I thought of a timer but I don't go to bed at exactly the same time every day so I'd have to reprogram it before bed every day.

I suppose it's better than nothing though 😀

Program it to a time you’ll definitely be asleep - so if you tend to drop off anywhere between 10PM to 12AM, for example, have it set to turn off at 1AM.

tulips27 · 19/12/2022 11:53

Thanks, I think I'll go with the timer. I was just wondering if I was missing some other obvious answer.

How about a smart plug with an app on phone/tablet? Much easier to change than a timer plug and those fiddly bits to pull out and push in

SlipperyLizard · 19/12/2022 11:55

Some smart plugs (we have Tapo ones) allow you to set a timer, so as you get into bed you could set a 30 minute (or whatever) timer and it would turn off after that. You can also schedule it, but the timer option seems more suited to you.

I don’t know if they’ve changed since we bought it, but we have an Amazon smart plug that doesn’t have the timer function, so best to check.

Oooh Tapo plugs are a great idea! I used to have a smart lightbulb from them until it got water inside from condensation and broke! But before that it was great.

Yes I was just going to say a countdown timer would work well, if there is such a thing - so it switches off an hour (or two, or whatever) after you turn on the lamp.

Turn the light off when you go to bed?

tulips27 · 19/12/2022 12:04

Thanks, @TangledWebofMincemeatDeception, the words "countdown timer" were what I needed. I found the product I'm looking for:

I like to read a bit in bed, that's why I have the lamp on.

Turn the light off when you go to bed?

That doesn't work if you wind down by reading or doing puzzles on paper, obviously.
Screens at bedtime aren't generally recommended but I use mine with the colour settings much less blue than default.

bloodywhitecat · 19/12/2022 12:08

I have the lamps downstairs plugged into Tapo plugs, mine are set so when I hit "Go to bed" the lamps switch off after a minute (I could chose any length of time). I have the little one's bubble lamp plugged into one too and that is set to turn off at 9pm every. You can set all manner of routines on them.

megletthesecond · 19/12/2022 12:08

Smart plug. We have the TCP ones.
I turn the kettle on from bed in the morning with mine.

bloodywhitecat · 19/12/2022 12:09

Tapo plug

BobbinThreadbare123 · 19/12/2022 12:10

Smart plug. We've got Belkin ones I think. This is how I turn my bedroom lights off. Got the Xmas tree and the fairy lights programmed with a smart plug via Alexa too.

MuggleMe · 20/12/2022 07:50

If you've got an Alexa their smart plugs are great. You can get into bed and just say Alexa turn my lamp off at x time or in y hours.
