Which public figures have been mistreated by the media?

The two that automatically spring to me are Princess Diana who died due to the paparazzi and Britney Spears who was built up to be knocked down.

More recently the hatred against Meghan.

Who do you think has been hounded by press past or present?

Princess Diana died due to not wearing a seatbelt and a car that was being driven fast by a driver under the influence. Britney is a more complex case and is someone with control over her own social media output, which is of increasingly concerning content.

I think Jade Goody had a pretty bad time.

iwasaterribleteen · 18/12/2022 01:47

Caroline Flack

Very many people. Often women but some men too. They often court the attention but then it eats them alive. Thing is nowadays people can choose to be more savvy but some don't.

Beyondshit · 18/12/2022 01:51

Christopher Jeffries

David Kelly?

The McCans

So many

Those paparazzi wouldn’t have been chasing Diana if the sales of newspapers and magazines didn’t rocket when her photos were on the front covers. The media feed the beast.

Who’s the beast? Why? How can we not be part of the beast? They are more important questions, IMO.

NuffSaidSam · 18/12/2022 02:09

Almost everyone, at some point, I think.

lack of ethics in journalism hurt everyone.

All the recent Meghan hoo-hah has been reminding me of how nuts the tabloids were over Chelsy Davy back in the day - and she didn't even marry St. Harry, just dated him! 80% of that coverage wasn't even anything to do with Harry or the RF, it was slagging off stuff like her going shopping with her mother, going out clubbing with friends from school, her dad's business partner, her saying the UK was too cold, etc. etc.

In the matter of too-frequent and continuously negative-to-horrible coverage of perfectly ordinary, boring, day-to-day doings, I'd also nominate Diane Abbott and (not primarily the UK press) Michelle Obama.

LlynTegid · 18/12/2022 07:40

I would add a few names, but their mistreatment has been very different. They are people whose behaviour or in my opinion crimes have been covered up in some way.

daretodenim · 18/12/2022 07:45

I can't think of anybody who has had things written about them like Jeremy Clarkson's latest piece of vileness against MM.

Until then I'd say Diane Abbott has had the worst of it in the U.K. press.

I haven't noticed anything particularly bad against Michelle Obama other than focussing on her clothes rather than her what she actually did. I wasn't looking out for it though so not reading everything.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 18/12/2022 07:47

Cliff Richard

Diane Abbott. She's an amazing woman but the media narrative is that she's stupid.

Rockbird · 18/12/2022 07:58

Beatrice and Eugenie. Vilified by the media because of who their parents are, particularly Beatrice who had some horrible things said about her looks. Seems to have stopped now but they were very young women at the time.

talkingmorenonsense · 18/12/2022 08:01

Too many! I’m astonished that anyone wants to be in the public eye, you lose all your privacy and the press can hound you and print lies.

DNAshelicase · 18/12/2022 08:05

Brendan Fraser, blacklisted by Hollywood following a sexual assault. He put on weight because of the trauma and got torn apart for not looking as good as he did at 23

Lindsay Lohan
Jade Goody (the first time she was in BB)

FKATondelayo · 22/12/2022 10:29

Amy Winehouse

Tiredallofthetime · 22/12/2022 10:32

I think I am hard pushed to think of anything more reprehensible than the treatment of the Dowlers by the media during Millie’s disappearance, and subsequent murder and trial.

Not public figures I know but that was appalling.

PinkMendinilla · 22/12/2022 10:39

Amy Winehouse, Britney Spears, Maxine Carr (obviously guilty of some wrongdoing but nothing proportionate to the witch hunt she was subjected to), Meghan M, the York sisters (for their appearances, it must be so hurtful), Diane Abbott, Jade Goody (prior to Shilpa Shetty incident), Jeremy Corbyn, Cherie Blair (very accomplished lawyer made out to be a fool), Christopher Jeffries

FKATondelayo · 22/12/2022 10:40

I agree with Diane Abbott, Jade Goody, Caroline Flack and Lindsay Lothan.

I would also add JK Rowling who receives death threats all day long and most mainstream and youth media pile it on with characterisation of her as 'bigot' who wants 'kill trans people'.
