We are having a get together next week, wine and nibbles cheese and meats kind of thing. Some of our friends have become vegetarian since we last had them over,
What are some nice things that we can make for them so we are not just giving them a plate of carrot sticks and hummus!

Thanks everyone ☺ 😘 there's lots of ideas there for me to use x I hadn't even given thought to the actual cheese being a problem as they are not vegan but will keep this in mind now. 😀

Can you not just goggle this?, people been vegetarian for decades!

Notanotherusername4321 · 18/12/2022 21:13

Can I just point out please get more veggie food than you think you’ll need, especially for a buffet :)

your non veggies will eat the veggie stuff as well as the meat, so if you’ve only catered enough food for one or two vegetarians they will not get much/anything to eat.

years of experience of not pushing to the front of the buffet and being left with breadsticks after the lovely veggie stuff gets eaten.😂.

@upfucked Most cheese is not vegetarian, it has rennet in it, so OP will specifically need to look for veggie cheese
Most wine also is non-veggie as it has isinglas (fish swim bladder) to filter it

Lager as well.

@Notanotherusername4321 yes lots of people seem to complain about vegetarian food but it's amazing how often the vegetarian plates are depleted rapidly unless your first upto the buffet!

Lots of cheese isn't actually vegetarian as it contains animal rennet. Check the packaging first to be sure

Yes

Redebs · 18/12/2022 21:19

And please keep the veggy food separate from the meat. Don't be that person who serves up with the same spoon or from the same platter.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/12/2022 21:24

I would not be impressed with cold pizza (especially the afore-mentioned 'cheap pizza') or a pasta salad.

Cheese for me, please, plus some veggie sausage rolls. I like those little peppers filled with cheese too, if you're feeling rich!

gogohmm · 18/12/2022 21:26

Aldi has vegan wine (a cote du Rhone) - remember not all wine is even vegetarian. Plenty of cheeses are vegetarian these days but the more speciality ones are less likely to be, check the label, otherwise I also recommend lidl no duck spring rolls, Sainsbury's has no scampi bites and you can't beat cheese and onion rolls. Personally I just mainline olives!

A sheet of frozen puff pastry laid out on a baking sheet is a good base for party snacks, somewhere between a pizza and a quiche. Score a border about 2cm from the edge and fill the centre. Sliced onions, sweated down so they’re soft and golden, sprinkled with cubes of blue cheese and black olives is a nice veggie one. Bake in the oven for whatever the packet says - I think it’s usually about 30 mins. Cut into portions and serve - can be hot or cold.

I'd like this, please! Forget everything else.

I'm veggie. We are having a get together Christmas Eve and I'm doing all veggie. quiches, cheese as some warm par baked crusty rolls, hummus ans Celery sticks, olives, pizzas and dips, mozzerell sticks. I bought a few veggie bits from Aldi to stick in the oven - onion bhaji, samosas no duck rolls etc. Hope this helps!

Mykittensmittens · 18/12/2022 22:08

Delias vegetarian sausage rolls (use a nice strong cheddar which is veggie) and they get snaffled quicker than the meat ones when I put them out.

Selford · 18/12/2022 22:17

If you wanted to bake, these are really good (and will almost certainly be eaten by meat-eaters as well: www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2009/aug/08/dan-lepard-black-olive-gougeres (replace the parmesan with veggie hard cheese, or Tesco's hard goat's cheese is veggie)

Vast majority of cheese sold in the U.K now use vegetable rennet and are perfectly fine for veggies. It’s only really the speciality cheeses you need to be careful of.

Stuffed peppers or chillis
a veg/cheese filo pie
stuffed mushrooms
patatas bravas
daal and pitas

Could not agree more....

But most 'vegetarian' buffet food is just normal food so why would anyone be surprised that everyone wants to eat the onion bhaji, cheese or egg sandwiches etc?

The problem is that many buffets have far too many processed pork options so is it any wonder that meat eaters want something different to sausage rolls, pork pies, ham sandwiches, mini sausages or scotch eggs?

If your buffet has more than two of these it's too many and you should swap so most items are vegan or vegetarian then everyone can eat it without vegetarians claiming that 'the meat eaters are eating all their food'.
