Home insurance claim advice

so my 19 year old sister travelled from uni to my parent’s today. She’s managed to lose her bag including her laptop and other valuables on the train. She’s in bits

Mum’s said my sister’s personal possessions are covered on her home insurance and insured outside of the home. However I’m not sure? The insurance policy covers accidental loss for these items, but I’m not sure if this will be covered as I think she may have left her bag on the seat. Would this be counted against her for a claim as it’s negligent? The policy doesn’t mention negligence, details are very scant. Just mentions accidental loss.

We have receipts for the main valuables like the laptop. Would the insurer pay the price on the receipt, or the current selling price? If there are no receipts for certain items, would the insurer not pay out?

thanks x

We’ve spent the evening contacting the train company to see if it’s been handed in, and have registered the items online but no luck

It depends on the terms of the individual policy and the policy exclusions. Also, it depends whether the policy covers "new for old" or the market rate of the item at the time of the loss. Again, check the specific terms.

Whose home insurance? Your mums or your sisters? Is your sister living at home still?

Ds is living at home/commuting to uni and we pay more specifically for his personal possesions outside the home and it is old for new on our policy.
