Now available from Costa, among other wintry drinkies, e.g. gingerbread latte. I'm having my first of the year so far tomorrow. They're a little expensive but I've earned enough beans to have a couple of freebies.

Do any of the other coffee chains, or small local shops, also sell outrageously calorific and sugar-loaded hot chocolates ?

Ooh I’m going to see if they do a sugar free one! I know sweeteners are almost universally derided but I can’t have the full sugar ones or I’ll conk out.

The best one is the salted caramel brownie hot chocolate from Caffè Nero.

My godmother makes a lethal Black Forest hot chocolate by adding kirsch. I highly recommend it.

I tried one once. I got half a glass of froth which the manager did have the good grace to top up. The Black Forest element was a small squirt of cherry sauce on the top

I have never been so disappointed in a drink.

Costa is definitely on my naughty list

I'm sure if Costa had an alcohol licence, kirsch would substitute the cherry syrup! If anyone has had a dud BFHC from Costa, then maybe it's because the baristas don't get much practice making them on account of their seasonality. I've been fortunate so far😉.

I've had one every year for goodness knows how long, probably 10 Christmases. When I lived abroad I even managed one on Christmas day once. But they seem to have got sweeter and more artificial over the years (or my tastes have matured) so I tend to go for the Hotel Chocolat Black forest now. Plus if I make my own I can use vegan marshmallows so I don't miss out on those either!

You can buy their syrups and make as many as you like at home.

Oh😁, I love these and like others didn't think they were doing them this year. Me and my daughter are going away for a few days today. Hope to get one later at bham airport. Must try the cafe Nero one mentioned too if I get a chance. Love all these fancy drinks

The salted caramel brownie hot chocolate from Nero is good but I would definitely recommend asking them to do their luxury Black Forest mocha as a hot chocolate instead.
