Favourite lido

I’ve got a weekend to myself next July and want to make the most of it by planning a trip specifically around visiting a lido.

Can people tell me their favourite lidos please?

I know there’s a Lido book but I’m after personal recommendations to give me a feel for them.

Portishead

Littlegoth · 16/12/2022 12:52

Ilkley Lido is pretty but it’s like people soup.

sanityisamyth · 16/12/2022 12:52

Pontypridd

MinnieMountain · 16/12/2022 13:07

Portishead is a good shout. I could visit Bristol too. What do you like about it @TallulahBetty ?

I don’t want people soup. I avoid my local one during the day in the summer.

There's a nice one in Reading called Thames Lido.

Disclaimer, I've not been myself but it looks nice and I've not heard anyone say it wasn't a lovely experience.

HaveGogglesWillTravel · 16/12/2022 13:15

Lewes. Pells Pool.

EBearhug · 16/12/2022 13:17

Reading is quite small, and expensive for non-members, though nice, with good food. I liked Newbury, but they spent this summer (of all summers...) rebuilding it, so while I expect it to be good, no one knows yet. It's council-run, though, so normal swim prices.

EBearhug · 16/12/2022 13:19

I really like Wischlingen in Dortmund, but thatmay not be a helpful recommendation. Germany is good at Freibäder, though.

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 16/12/2022 13:44

Tooting Bec lido, the biggest in the country. 90m x 30m. No matter how busy it gets there is always plenty of room to swim.
Other good ones are
Parliament Hill lido
Tinside lido
Jubilee lido

hugoagogo · 16/12/2022 13:47

Tinside in Plymouth is so beautiful.

GoldenCupidon · 16/12/2022 13:48

Jubilee Pool in Penzance. Pretty basic but beaut.

OldTinHat · 16/12/2022 13:58

Arundel. Just under the castle.

CMOTDibbler · 16/12/2022 14:00

Tinside is amazing, just such an incredible location too. My local is Cheltenham which is pretty. How would you feel about Clevedon marine lake? Not people soup at all, and you could do Portishead on the same trip.
My wish list lido is Jesus Green

SinnerBoy · 16/12/2022 14:03

We stayed with relatives near Peterborough, this summer and there's a nice one there. Plenty of shade on the sides, a little play area and a baby pool. The canteen food was better than I expected. She loved it.

The one at Tynemouth Longsands has been derelict for about 25 years. It used to be good, when I was a youngster.

MinnieMountain · 16/12/2022 14:17

Hmm. Arundel itself looks pretty and would be good for walking too.

I like your idea @CMOTDibbler . Your local one is beautiful.

Peterborough is my local lido, so I really should go to Jesus Green sometime.

Penzance and Plymouth are now both of the list for when I have a long weekend free.

I’ve only been to two, Penzance and Guildford. Guildford lido is huge!

garlictwist · 16/12/2022 14:24

Hathersage. Lovely view of the hills when you're doing backstroke!

mindutopia · 16/12/2022 14:26

It's not quite what you're asking for as neither are technically lidos, but the Bude Sea Pool is wonderful as are the bathing ponds at Hampstead Heath.

MinnieMountain · 16/12/2022 14:45

Now I feel embarrassed. I completely forgot Hathersage. I was due to go there for the lido in May 2020.

I was going to say Hathersage - you can now book online so don’t have to queue at busy times

Is that what it's called? It's quite nice round there, by the river; all the meadows and trees.

LlynTegid · 16/12/2022 15:08

Hampstead Heath Ladies Pond would mean peace and quiet and no chance of men annoying you either in conversation or being one of those men who hog a pool by the manner of their swimming.

SizzlestheSausageDog · 16/12/2022 15:11

I live near Reading and have been there a few times. The food and swim packages are lovely. The restaurant is excellent. It is my annual birthday treat to myself!
