Are you keeping track of usage to ensure you know your upcoming energy bills and predicted annual usage??

Just thinking about the cold weather over the last week, people altering their usage and the increased cost in energy.

Are people keeping track of usage just to see what they are using, if their direct debits are on track etc. I know that I have used a lot this last week.

It's scary to see the usage. But OTOH, it's useful to me to know that I know the usage and if I am on track

I was until kids and DH got ill and then I unplugged the display and turned it to face the wall!!

We are lucky that we can afford an increase and it wasn't fair on anyone to be stressing about the cost when people were poorly.

It'll go back on when everyone's on the mend.

I sailed past the 1000kwh of gas mark for December yesterday.
The most I've ever used in the past for the whole month is 650kwh. Eep.

Hopefully it will get a bit warmer over the next few weeks.

And let's hope January isn't as cold

Amen to that!

No.

Finally warmer here today, 2c feels positively toasty!
I've also done a spin class so I'm creating my own heat and feel really warm now

The last really long cold snap in December 2010, was followed by a milder January and February, so I’m hoping it’s that way this winter.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 17/12/2022 14:23

I have the bulb app, it updates each morning to tell me how much I've used so far that month, and I check in with it every few days.

I am very frugal but I refuse to be cold over the Christmas holidays so I will use what I use and deal with it next month.

I have been looking at 'historic' weather data - just to get a reminder of last year

This time last year it was a balmy 7C here

I check mine weekly on a Saturday morning and monthly on the first of the month. Electric doesn't change much, a fairly consistent £40 a month, so it's mainly gas I keep an eye on in winter. We've used 18 units, so about 200kwh in only the last week. Hoping the next couple of weeks stay warm as we are home more.

Average where I am for the past five Decembers has been 8 or 9, range of about -1 to 15. So far this December has averaged 2 degrees!

pointythings · 17/12/2022 14:49

Nope. I read my meter monthly and I know how much credit I have month to month. I've adjusted my thermostat downwards and put on more layers, but it is what it is. I'm not going to stress myself out because we're having a cold snap.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 17/12/2022 14:50

No. I've always don't monthly readings, they do the graphs.

So far, including the various emails about how my current usage and the energy price cap changes, there is no nasty surprise waiting, they've even just reduced my direct debit again.

I won't be cold. Whatever happens. Even if it something happens and our usage spirals, I'll manage it by contacting them and arranging a repayment schedule I can manage.

As far as we can tell they are really responsive as long as you keep in touch.

florriemoss · 17/12/2022 14:56

No, I decided not to. I've had the heating on extra during the last few extremely cold days (we had icicles outside), but it's predicted to be warmer over the next few days so will hopefully balance out.

No smart meter and I haven't attempted to work out the cost with readings. Though I could probably estimate if I wanted to.
