What abomination did I just uncover in my kitchen?

Just got back home after a week away. No smell, everything seemed fine. Few weird specks on the kitchen floor which I thought I was lazy to have missed when doing a hoover last week.

Happened to glance in my trusty Waitrose bag for life behind my kitchen door and it was FULL of weird brown kernels, like brown rice but maybe twice the length and three times the thickness. And some furry brown object that may have once been a green pepper, long forgotten.

No pics, as I couldn't bear it - I immediately put the whole lot in bin bag and ran it outside, and squirted bleach everywhere. But what on earth was breeding at this time of year? And is it still going to be lurking around in the corners of my kitchen?

Grateful for any reassurance.

Oh no, sounds like a very unpleasant find! Brown grains of rice sounds like mouse poo. Were they dark brown?

Acronymsandinitialisms · 15/12/2022 23:48

Sounds like mouse poo poo, I'm afraid.

beaucorbeau · 15/12/2022 23:49

They were light brown, not mouse poo coloured from my sadly extensive experience (although a similar size, hmm...)

How can we help without a pic?!

beaucorbeau · 15/12/2022 23:51

@Justgivemewine yes. Argh.

@Ravageur I know, I'm sorry, but it took all of my courage to get it in a bin bag and out into the wheelie bin - flash photography just wasn't possible.

yuck! Looks like you got back just in time!

Suemademedoit · 15/12/2022 23:54

I don’t think that was a green pepper you left in the bag, OP!

The good news is that you’ve chucked it all out now and there should be no further unwanted creatures.

Suemademedoit · 15/12/2022 23:54

Actually - when are your bins collected? And, is your Shellie bin outdoors and is it really really cold where you are?

beaucorbeau · 15/12/2022 23:57

It's going to be -4 tonight, and the bins are well away from my house... I hope I haven't just been a horrendous neighbour/bin service user.

if you didn’t come home to a house full of flies, hopefully you got rid in time before they hatched.

we had this problem once, they found a nice little space behind a cupboard to breed, then hatched over a couple of days. Fortunately we sussed out where they were coming from and had a massive cleaning spree. Little bastards.
