Just that really. Tell me about your collections. I have always been fascinated by people who collect things. What they collect. Do they display them. How attached are you too them. Will they be left to someone once you're gone.

OP posts:

I collect vintage compact cases. I have about 60 now. 99% are from eBay, most in fabulous condition. The oldest is from the 1940s, the more recent ones are from the 1970s. Most are 1950s / 1960s. Nearly all under £10 each.

I started collecting them because I love 50s dresses and I wanted an accessory when I went out. Then couldn't stop!

They're not on display but they're in a sort of drawered storage case of their own. I pick one to go with my outfit when dressing up to go out. I usually only use the mirror part as the powder can be hard to get hold of (and a bugger to put in).

iklboo · 15/12/2022 19:11

Sorry - they'll be left for DS to do what he wants with I suppose. I think the most valuable one is worth about £80.

Do you want a new one? I have one I don't use!

I collect Royal Albert fine bone china. I especially love tea pots. I have full dinner services for 40 people in Old Country Roses, Lavender Rose for 28 people and Val d'Or for 24 people. From soup coup to the salt and pepper pots, covered serving dishes, butter dishes, mustard pots and full tea services too. I have to rent a lock up to store some of them. It is a bit of an obsession actually.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/12/2022 19:38

My official collection is cat ornaments - everything from Royal Crown a derby cats to ones from charity shops. But if you ask dh, he’d say I also collect books and yarn - and he’s not wrong, to be fair.

Kleptronic · 15/12/2022 19:39

I collect stones. From wherever we've been. Obviously they're not catalogued, but I know where each one came from, and when. And I have pocket stones in my coats. They are soothing in trying circumstances. Only one per pocket, but they come in place pairs.

I do realise this is incredibly boring. But to me they are memory.

BamBamBilla · 15/12/2022 19:39

Squashed pennies from the press machines at local attractions. I have about 30 and my favourite is from Wookey Hole and the one that came from the furthest was the Empire State Building in NYC.

Giggorata · 15/12/2022 19:41

I collect dolls houses, although I have to call a halt now, because of space. (ahem, 30 plus)
I collect dolls house dolls too, over 500 of them, all named and with biographies.
I also collect taxidermy, curios, tarot card decks, hat pins, Italian coloured glass bottles, cloisonné and huge ostentatious rings.

This doesn’t include the collections that get used, like all the Rayware Olivio kitchenware, science fiction and occult magazines, Blue Fish clothes and interesting boots.

gjkufbb · 15/12/2022 19:43

I collect books. That's not as interesting as other peoples responses but I buy them everywhere I go. I have 4 large bookcases full of books. I don't think I'll ever have enough

iklboo · 15/12/2022 19:48

Oh @Cocoandcleo - are you sure? How much would you like for it? You're so lovely!

HelloIsItYouImLookingFor · 15/12/2022 19:49

I collect anything beauty related. Skincare, perfumes, body care etc.

Yes no worries Smile I'll just need to dig it out! I think it's in a drawer in my son's room so I'll have a look tomorrow then I can send a pic!

Davros · 15/12/2022 19:51

Obelisks

XenoBitch · 15/12/2022 19:53

Action figures. I get them out the box and pose them too. I am a woman in my 40s 😂

romdowa · 15/12/2022 19:54

I collect rubber ducks and I have a very small collection of different monopoly versions. I also have a collection of lego figures from years ago but I stopped collecting
Ducks and monopoly are on shelves and lego men are in the attic

Giggorata · 15/12/2022 19:55

I realise I haven' t fully answered OP's post. I passionately adore all of my collections and mention them in individual bequests to beloved friends
I remind the DC that the doll houses need to go to a specialist or collectors' auction when I’m gone. Many of them are big names and worth thousands.
Likewise the contents and some of the dolls.
The tarot decks include many rare and out of print ones, too.
Everything else is sort of self explanatory.
i have a room dedicated to the dolls houses, with specially constructed shelving and lighting.
I have a curio cabinet for the interesting little stuff.
The Italian glass sits on the window sills, reflecting light.
The hat pins are in special holders.
The taxidermy is here and there in the house.
I have a tarot cupboard.
The cloisonné is on a shelf thing in the bedroom.
I've got one of those mini chests of drawers for the rings

Yamadori · 15/12/2022 19:56

I collect:

World postage stamps with picture of volcanoes on them. I've always been fascinated by volcanoes and physical geography in general. I might branch out into stamps with maps on as well.

Vintage seaside postcards. The really early ones produced and ornately decorated by local photographers.

And books about bonsai.

GlitteryShinyShit · 15/12/2022 19:56

I collect coins (UK) that are deemed rare. Usually £2 coins the odd 50p coin. Commemorative ones etc. They have pictures on.
It started as a little game and I usually forget to check most of the time. I put them all in a little vintage tin that belonged to my grandma (1950s).

I'm not trying to make money from it, I doubt they would be worth much anyway, I just enjoy collecting them.

It's my little thing I like doing that nobody knows about 😉

Loachworks · 15/12/2022 19:58

Cornishware. Some I use every day, some are too rare to risk and are on dressers.

Bananalanacake · 15/12/2022 19:58

Playmobil and Lego figures.

Flockameanie · 15/12/2022 19:59

this thread is so fascinating! I’m the opposite of a collector (more of a get-ridder), but I find the impulse to collect really interesting.

OtterInABox · 15/12/2022 19:59

Lalique and Meissen

louderthan · 15/12/2022 20:00

Royal family commemorative ceramics. My proudest possession is a Charles and Di beer mug

dodobookends · 15/12/2022 20:04

I have a small collection of unusual coins. Having worked on the tills in a bank for years, we were always finding random foreign coins that couldn't be used or exchanged. They used to get put in a tin on a shelf, and one day I asked the manager whether I could possibly have a few as I found them interesting. Take the lot, he said, they are worthless and we can't do anything else with them.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/12/2022 20:05

Moss

😂
Well, I amused myself anyway!
