Anyone accidentally ingested de icer

I was de icing the car. Was using the scraper but wiped a bit of ice away with my hands. Didn't think much of it.

Came inside to make tea for the kids, was in a rush on automatic mode, so cannot remember whether I washed hands or not.
Anyway kids had dipped biscuits and possibly a sip of tea.
One of them mentioned a not nice taste so said they did not finish the tea.
Afterwards it clicked about my hands, and yes when I smelt my hands, I could smell a strong deicer smell.
They've gone to school now but I'm worried.
Do you think this is anything to worry about?

No, I don't. It's not like anyone drank any or had a mouthful, just a brief taste.

thaegumathteth · 15/12/2022 09:57

No I wouldn't worry

DecayedStrumpet · 15/12/2022 09:58

You're not supposed to drink the stuff but licking it will be fine.

SimonaSimms · 15/12/2022 09:58

Are you really worried about this? I mean really?

Lottie2shoes · 15/12/2022 09:59

Thanks to all that replied quickly. I feel better.

@SimonaSimms
Yes obviously. I would not start the thread if I was not. Read a few scaremongering stories on Google.

depends what’s in it 🤷‍♀️

such a small amount is unlikely to cause major harm, but I’d maybe have a couple of whiskeys to be sure 😁

@Notanotherusername4321 😂

Did you know that commercial ice cream brands put a form of anti freeze into their ice cream called propylene glycol.

Don't worry it will only be a minuscule amount of de icer, if any, that would have transferred.

JellySaurus · 15/12/2022 10:09

Because they contain alcohol, de-icers have foul-tasting chemicals added to prevent people drinking them. You would not be able to drink enough to cause harm.

I initially was not too worried, but stupidly decided to Google. Reading things like organ failure within hours of ingesting small amounts etc etc.
I know! I should know better than to believe everything on there.

Thanks for putting my mind at ease.

Hmm, this might sound horrible, but my husband drank yesterday screen wash (don't ask why, this situation is so ridiculous and so scary, that I don't even want to talk about it- not his fault, not suicide attempt, just genuine mistake of someone at work). I drove him to a&e, he stayed there few hours (was meant to be there 24 hours, but toxicology results were OK), got tests done and he's fine at home now. Just stomachache. Your kids will be fine, don't worry. You only had a bit on your hands. He drank whole mug 😶I still can't believe it happened.
