Nose piercing help please!

I had my nose pierced in May and was told it would take about three months to heal. I kept it clean and avoided putting any creams etc around it. It took longer than I would have liked and I’ve kept going with hot compresses when necessary. I still haven’t taken it out or changed it.

I don’t tend to wear much make up, but recently I’ve been pasty and going out a bit more, so I’ve been using tinted moisturiser and powder as well as needing normal moisturiser. I really try to avoid the piercing, but inevitably it gets in and ends up getting sore and gunky again, despite cleaning it twice daily.

I’m really fed up with it. Is this normal?

How did you have it done ? Gun or needle?

Mines healed up as couldn't wear a nose stud for work , but it healed fast , no gunk , are you bathing it with dettol or similar? You could try putting a gold sleeper in as it's easier to clean and turn and gold shouldn't give any allergic reaction?

I was told strictly no cleaning with anything other than hot water and absolutely no turning it!
Mine healed really quickly and I was slapping make up & cream etc on and around not that long after having it done.

Have you been turning it?

stillvicarinatutu · 14/12/2022 22:55

See I had mine done with a gun about 20 years ago!

But it healed fast , no issues . No infection.
I used dilute dettol to clean mine with a cotton bud .

I had mine done with a gun decades ago too. It took about 2 weeks to stop having gunk and it's never been sore or gunky since.

Sorry but no, I don't think it's normal.

I had it done with a needle and use saline. I’m fairly certain it’s a titanium stud.

I try really hard not to turn it, but sometimes the bit in my nostril pokes down and is visible so I turn it to get it out of the way. Would that be enough to be causing this?

The place I went to comes really highly recommended (it’s a tattoo place) and DD had her ears done there with no problems. I’m not sure I was given particularly good after care advice though 😕

I had mine done in August with a needle. Healed pretty quickly, I was cleaning with salt water twice a day, no turning.
I have changed it a few times but only recently.
I wear make up everyday and am not careful around the piercing, no issues.
Something doesn't seem right with yours if it's still not healed.

HardySwine · 14/12/2022 23:06

Thanks all. I think I might go to one of the other recommended places in town next week and see if they can have a look at it. I’d be gutted if I had to take it out 🥺

You could always take it out and do the other side.

What kind of stud?

L shape, a pin etc? I need the L shape ones, heals much better

stillvicarinatutu · 14/12/2022 23:22

I'd let it heal and try again in a few months .

I always got on better with the L shaped studs .

HardySwine · 14/12/2022 23:28

It’s an L shaped one

It sounds like you’ve did all the right things but your body is just rejecting it somehow . Shortly after I got mine pierced there was some slight infection/gunk but i kept on cleaning it with my homemade solution (salt and hot water) and it was fine after a week or two. It’s been pierced for 7 years now never had an issues.

A while back I went to a piercing shop in to swap the nose ring i was wearing at the time for a stud and experienced the problem of the back of the stud poking out - it looked awful but it was also a sign they had not picked the right stud for my nose. I ended up going back to another studio and getting them to change it again for me. I suspect it might have irritated my nose eventually if I hadn’t.

There is more than one nose shape and good piercers should use the one that’s right for your nose and it’s possible that yours never.

stillvicarinatutu · 15/12/2022 00:05

I could change my stud like I did my earrings- never had a problem Changing it .

Afreshstar · 15/12/2022 02:15

Some people (probably most) can Change their own but my point was actually the type of nose stud the studio gave me was the wrong style/fit for my nose. I specifically asked them to recommend one which would be good for my shape of nose and they failed. The other studio said they wouldn’t have given that one to me and fitted me with one which was suited to my nose.

YodaBabe · 15/12/2022 02:50

My daughter had the same problem, for her it was the jewellery that was causing the problem.
She changed the jewellery to a plastic targus bar with a jewel on the end and all good now.

endoflevelbaddy · 15/12/2022 07:32

You could try something other than titanium, friend of mine was allergic and it kept getting gunky like you describe.
I would go back to the piercing place and get them to swap it out for you.

I've had mine pierced 3 times over the years and always worn makeup, moved it (inevitably gets caught, or need the stem but poking back up my nostril) and changed to different studs or rings more quickly than recommended and never had an issue with it.
