I have posted in Christmas too. I accidentally broke his friend years ago 😢 but kept this one & do hunt every year in case I find him a friend, but so far, no luck 🤷‍♀️

Any identifying marks on his bottom to give us a clue where he was originally from?

No, nothing. My dad bought him, I think from Matalan. None I've found so far are quite right. Their scarves or hats are the wrong colours.

There is a set, similar, on etsy complete with a scarf. If won't let me post the link though.

Matalan have a cookie jar that looks the same.

Definitely Matalan. The only google image search hit coming up, that is a perfect match to your penguin, is to a Pinterest page with a Matalan link on it. You never know, he might turn up on ebay. Good luck!
