It's been showing much higher costs the last week, a look online suggested this was down to the cold spell causing the boiler to work harder, BUT...

It went up £4 overnight.

During the few seconds (<1 minute) I was looking through the display menu this lunchtime, it jumped by £9!!

What's going on?!

If you mean your in home display, they aren't always accurate.

Does your supplier give online breakdowns/regular updates of your usage?

If not I'd recommend downloading loop.homes/ it updates every few hours with separate gas and electric usage and cost and lets you see exactly what you're using for each fuel and when.

Its likely to be showing higher costs because it's colder outside. Was your heating on overnight? As an example, my heating is off overnight so only electric . Heating on at 5.30 and by 7.30 the smart meter was nearly at £4 for both gas and elec. The heating is currently on low to keep the worst of the chill off the house and it's showing £9. Comparably yesterday it was around £7.50 at a similar time of day. It's -4 outside.

Our metre isn’t an instant reading it can stay on the same amount for hours then it updates

I unplugged my smart meter and hid it in a cupboard.

It's so weird, it's dropped down again now!

I don't understand it at all :/

Thank you for your replies, will look into all your suggestions.
