Hi. Have you thought about counselling? In the area I live in you can do a self referral. Nothing to lose? Be kind to yourself.

Yes I’m thinking about it
but so much has happened in my life I worry dredging it all up would make me worse

My SIL swears by cold water swimming. Something about the adrenaline. You may be sceptical, but it worked for her after years of depression.

You may feel worse in the short term by discussing it in therapy, but when you release the repressed emotion your life can change immeasurably.

Depression can involve a lack of serotonin or other chemicals in the brain so it would be impossible to 'snap out of it'. But there are other ways to raise levels and practice self care.

Exercise can help lift the mood. You need to really force yourself to do it when you’re depressed though, which is difficult.
