Is it true that you can get a strep A test from a chemist ? Or is that not true ?

OP posts:
Remmy123 · 13/12/2022 12:49

Not true

AriettyHomily · 13/12/2022 13:04

Not true

GreenPeacock · 13/12/2022 13:35

Possibly true. One of our local pharmacies was selling swabs. Last I heard they'd sold out though so I'd call places before making a trip.

PaperMonster · 13/12/2022 13:41

Some are doing the tests privately, so you need to pay.

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 13/12/2022 17:48

One near me is doing it privately for £20

ChristmasJingleBalls · 13/12/2022 18:39

But the pharmacist can’t give you a prescription.

MissyB1 · 13/12/2022 18:44

It’s constantly being shared on FB but extremely unlikely to be true. Ok you might be able to pay for a test but where are you going to get a prescription?

Coraline353 · 13/12/2022 18:52

There's a chemist chain near us in SE London that are doing the tests. You can book an appointment for the test (it's £30 I think) and if it's positive they can give you antibiotics - at least that was the plan when they emailed but obviously supply of antibiotics now is an issue

So yes it may be true.

I think we live near the same Chemists.

Maybe! They do a lot of services. DC got the polio vaccine there

As did my DD! And DH went there for his covid booster.

LittleMrsPerfect · 13/12/2022 19:52

Yes but not all pharmacies as the pharmacist needs training yo be able to do this extra service

DeathMetalMum · 13/12/2022 19:59

Some pharmacies offer a sore throat swab service where they can give antibiotics. However this isn't a Strep-A test.

Depending on the region pharmacies have been advised to refer anyone with strep-A symptoms to GPs.

DeathMetalMum · 13/12/2022 20:03

I think the pharmacies that are offering it for a cost are basically the same as going to a private GP.

The NHS are currently not offering the throat swab free from the pharmacy. It's very confusing and paitents seem to be being passed round from the GP to the pharmacy, and quite rightly getting frustrated.

LittleMrsPerfect · 13/12/2022 20:09

Yeah No pharmacy will offer it for free, it's a private service.

But the GPs are not routinely testing either, just giving Antibiotics and making the shortage worse.
