Can anyone help with my experiences with the RAC who left me out of pocket?
3 weeks ago my tyre blew on the Motorway and I called the RAC. The dispatch desk spent a significant amount of the call trying to sell me a tyre. I made clear, again and again, that I had two very very little children, and I couldn’t keep them waiting in the freezing cold for long.
After calling for over an hour for an update, I was eventually told that they would not be sending a despatch van to tow me to the nearest town, a 10 minute drive away. Instead they had contracted the job out to Tyres-For-You. When I begged for an ETA I was advised that they could provide a phone number, I could call them myself and find out. Gold service. I called the RAC back and spoke to an advisor who gave me an ETA.
It transpires that the firm who were allocated the job were over 50 miles away from where we had broken down. We were made to wait for over 3 hours in the freezing cold.
The tyre that was replaced has just split and I took it to my Vauxhall dealer today who advised me that the mechanic split the tyre when he replaced it. So another £100 to get it fixed. £300 in total. When I called RAC to complain, advising them I have a report from my dealer that the tyre was split due to a bad job, I was told it had nothing to do with the RAC. I have to fight it out with the tyre company directly.
If I had known this I would have called a tyre company myself in the nearest town. Instead the RAC have washed their hands. They won’t even consider accepting a complaint as they argue that they despatched a mechanic within 90 mins which they advised was an excellent response.
I will of course leave RAC and return to the AA but do I stand a chance getting my money back from this tyre company, of even the RAC? I need to go back to the RAC as I don’t have the mechani’s details since the RAC facilitated the job. I don’t have a contract with the mechanic but with the RAC who provided a service that has financially cost me.
Can anyone advise if I can fight it out with the RAC? I would have asked more questions at the time, but i was freezing cold and trying to keep 2 x DD warm (3 and 5).
