Please explain Nintendo Switch Lite to me

Can someone please put me out of my misery.

I need to buy games for a switch Lite. (for DS, 8). I can't understand which games are compatible for a Lite, and which are for Switch only and won't run on switch lite.

I've spent an hour on Nintendo website this evening and still no further forward!

Switch Lite is a surprise present so I don't want to ask DS. Can anyone please recommend any games that will definitely work. Thanks

Our full switch only gets used in docked mode if we are playing a multiplayer game. Otherwise ds uses it as a big lite, tbh. He covets my lite, but in reality he wouldn’t want it as much - he plays the main console with controllers detached for some games, as he finds it more comfortable, which of course he couldn’t do with a lite (well, technically I know he could sync more controllers and do it that way, I expect, but easier on the main switch)

he also prefers the slightly bigger screen.

we’ve even managed 4 player mariokart on the switch screen when away on holiday and I couldn’t be bothered to sort the dock out.

if it’s the only console, I’d go for that every time if possible, as more scope for multiplayer with friends, even without a tv.

We have both and LOTSSSS of games. I’ve never checked compatibility when buying games and haven’t had any problems so have to assume all work in both.

@CockSpadget

Apologies, I was a bit ott with my reply. A long stressful day in work

We have both consoles and agree a main console is ideal, if possible. Great for when friends come over. But there are only a handful of games that don't work on the lite.

Pokémon Sword / Shield or Scarlet / Violet (you choose one in both cases) as long as DS is a reasonably good reader (the games aren’t voiced and all dialogue appears as text boxes on screen). Don’t bother with Let’s Go Pikachu. It is very boring.

I’ve just checked the games we have as cartridges. Out of over 30 games, the only ones we have which aren’t compatible with the lite are Mario party and possibly the Labo games (I say possibly - the box doesn’t have icons, and I haven’t played these). Ring fit also didn’t have icons showing compatibility, but I think I’ve played that on my lite (wasn’t ideal though).

we have others that are downloads, but I think out of those the only one not compatible with the lite is just dance.

so the vast majority of games are compatible.

I still think a full console is a better way to go if it is the only console, though.

The info about the superiority of the Switch is really helpful, thank you.
I'm having another think about which console,
I've just bought Mario + Rabbids which was £20 or 2 for £20 at Argos, so I've also got Stranded Sails, explorers of the cursed islands as part of the deal as its a sort of island adventure thing I thought he'd like.
Now looking at chess ones.....

@DeathMetalMum no need for you to apologise, I was the knob. I’ve give my head shake and normal service will resume 😂
