I've messed up my gingerbread men. Advice from bakers please!

So I make cakes and cupcakes all the time and most recipes follow a rule of
Cream sugar and butter.
Add eggs.
Add flour. Done.

My friend sent me a screenshot of some gingerbread men she made for the kids but just the recipe no method.
So I've followed the usual cake rule and now realise I've messed up. It has formed a dough but very sticky.
I checked now and it should have been more like biscuit method of crumbling flour and butter together then sugar then egg etc.

So can I save this sticky dough? Is more flour the answer?

That's what I get for wanting to do some festive baking with the kids 😆 help!

If it's too sticky, I'd probably chuck more flour in. I might also check a couple of recipes to see how much they varied from what I'd done.

My gingerbread dough is always sticky. I follow the bbc good food one which yields a chewy, soft biscuit.

just flour the surface and pin you roll them with.

@Suprima I've just checked the bbc good food one and the quantities are the exact same as the one I've done so I've stuck it in the fridge for a bit and hopefully it will be ok.
I haven't melted any ingredients together today just mixed it all in.

Fingers crossed

Bbc good food recipe can't go wrong

It'll be soft/sticky until its been in the fridge for an hour then just add a tiny bit more flour needs be.

Double the recipe they're really nice!

Definitely don't chuck it - just roll it out between greaseproof if it's a bit sticky. For future reference if you want to make "traditional " gingerbread men you start by melting the butter, treacle, sugar and spices together rather than creaming them - there is a BBC recipe calked ultimate easy gingerbread
