GP or wait and see? DD(16) poorly and sleeping loads!

Hi,

So my dd has clearly caught a bug of some sort - slight cough and cold, achy, elevated heart rate, but no temperature. She says her back hurts, but not sure how connected that is, as she sits in a really awkward position in art at school - really tall stools, with low tables, and a friend in her art class has also complained of similar back pain.

For the past 48hrs, she's hardly been out of bed. Came down briefly late morning, early afternoon, had something to eat and seemed a bit more herself, but then the tiredness hit her again and she's been in and out of sleep for the past 3 hours. Last night she went straight to bed after dinner, at 6.30 and slept until 8 this morning!

This just isn't like her, so I'm seriously thinking about calling the doctors. Could a bug really make her this tired?

TIA

I would get an opinion, it could be nothing, but it could be something more serious. Do you know where she is in her cycle? When I was younger PMT would hit me with an absolute wall of fatigue.

Dilbertian · 12/12/2022 15:59

Covid? It wipes some people out, even with otherwise mild symptosms.

SaltyPopcornIcecream · 12/12/2022 16:06

@Hollyhead I think she's coming up to her period actually and it definitely affects her mood and sometimes she complains of head and even jaw ache.

@Dilbertian Possibly, but haven't done a test. Don't have any in the house and the roads are too icy to drive right now. She had it a few months a go, but I know it's doing the rounds in her school right now, like most schools.

I've seen her with all sorts of bugs/viruses, but I've never seen it wipe her out like this, unless she was being sick and had no appetite.

DP thinks it's just her body doing what it needs to do and I should just let her sleep, but I don't know.

Covid does present as fatigue with back pain in some but there is a lot of influenza A around at the moment, more than Covid for teens so could be that. Rest, hydration, keep warm and paracetamol/ibuprofen as needed. Let her sleep at the moment. If you think she is getting worse then call 111 for advice.

Newuser82 · 12/12/2022 16:09

I was also going to suggest flu/COVID. Hope she feels better soon.

SirVixofVixHall · 12/12/2022 16:10

Sounds like Covid, my friend’s teenagers got lower back pain with it, it is common.
Otherwise could be flu which also wipes one out. Flu is pretty horrible.

BergamotandLime · 12/12/2022 16:11

I've just had Covid and sounds just like I was!

postcardpuffin · 12/12/2022 16:12

Whenever I’ve had proper flu I’ve had back and joint pain with it - especially lower back. I think it’s a pretty common flu symptom.

BungleandGeorge · 12/12/2022 16:14

Covid test from Amazon prime?

Doingmybest12 · 12/12/2022 16:15

If you are worried I would phone the Dr to talk about her symptoms.

Stickytoastandhoney · 12/12/2022 16:23

Not much your doctor can do for a virus. Paracetamol for pain and fever, plenty of fluids. Your partner is correct saying her body is just doing its job. Normal to be worried though 😊

SaltyPopcornIcecream · 12/12/2022 16:36

Thanks for your replies. It is sounding like covid isn't it? She's got so much to do at school! Think it's going to really stress her out if she's unable to go, but obviously if she can't, she can't.

Was up with her just now and gave her a snack and she seemed much more bright, but then out if nowhere said she needed to sleep and crashed again. So up and down! I had covid last spring and felt pretty rubbish with an awful cough, but whereas I felt tired, I wasn't sleeping like this. I guess everyone reacts differently though.

She might have an undetected anaemia or urinary infection; contact GP to arrange a check up with bloods and urine test.

User57632678 · 12/12/2022 16:44

Flu/covid most likely however back pain makes me think possibly kidney infection? Has she possibly left a UTI untreated? I remember having one when I was her age, I was so unwell but easily treated with antibiotics.

Herejustforthisone · 12/12/2022 17:16

Could she have had a UTI which has gone up to her kidneys, causing the back ache? You can feel unbelievably unwell with them. With the tiredness, malaise, myalgia and high heart rate, I’d probably not bother with a Covid test but would call the doctors. I had a fever-less kidney infection and I felt absolutely bloody awful. It’s probably just a shitty virus, there’s enough about, but with the backache I might seek a Gp’s opinion.

Mamabear12 · 28/12/2022 09:21

This doesn’t seem right. Take her to the GP if it has been more then a few days.

Mamabear12 · 28/12/2022 09:22

And yes could be kidney infection. That can turn to sepsis if not treated.

Singleandproud · 28/12/2022 09:25

@Mamabear12 this thread is a couple of weeks old.

Hopefully Ops daughter has recovered now.
