Laptop, Chromebook or tablet!

I've got myself a new laptop (nothing fancy) and my 7yr is borrowing it daily for web based games (like purple mash, spelling Shed, bbc games), Netflix and you tube. I'm quite keen to get him his own before he breaks mine! I just can't work out what's best for him. It needs to be cheap and robust. Was thinking Chromebook but then he can't use it whilst travelling I don't think, but then he couldn't a laptop or or tablet unless it's using my hot spot. If I got a tablet I'd need to get a keyboard so homework and web based gaming is easier. What shall I do?! Confused

I bought a chromebook for mine a few years ago and because it isnt windows based barely any games would work on it - only if it can be downloaded from the app store would it work. I dont know about all of them, but my work laptop can use mobile hotspots so dont count them out because of that

If he’s already borrowing a laptop and using it daily, I’d go for the laptop.

Incidentally, you can get tablets (and laptops) that take a sim card so they don’t need to use a hotspot. They do tend to be more expensive.

Thank you both. I guess the laptops are more expensive than chromebooks so that's the main decision there. Can you use mobile hotspots for Chromebook?

You can use wifi hotspots, or tether from a phone, yes.

A laptop is a lot more versatile. That said, I have both and use my tablet (with SIM card) most of the time. It is much more portable and lasts far longer between charges.

Get a refurbished ex business laptop. You well get a much better spec at a reasonable price.

Don't get a chromebook. They are a pain in the butt! Won't let you use any MS stuff. Not worth the money saving!
