Tonsillitis, how long for AB's to start to work?

Full day of AB's on Saturday, full day on Sunday, Monday morning and symptoms are worse.

He also has spots on his tongue, strawberry tongue, no rash, tonsils look awful, and a banging headache since yesterday.

In my experience after 48 hours of AB's symptoms start to feel slightly better.

But this is worse.

I think you need to see the dr again. They should usually improve tonsillitis in a day.

I would call the GP, those antibiotics may not be working for him. I find it improves things in a day usually. My son's just had tonsillitis and he was much better within a couple of hours of the first dose.

IME AB’s for tonsillitis kick in quickly. I think you need to go back to the GP, especially if symptoms are worsening over staying the same.

My DD has tonsillitis, the worst bout she's ever had and it's taken 72hrs to see an improvement after her first dose.

I did check with the pharmacist who said it can take up to 5 days to see any improvement.

I hope they feel better soon.

Under a day ime. Is it liquid? I under-dosed myself years ago using a teaspoon and not the plastic spoon supplied.

How long was the course? I'm also worried it's too short.

They originally gave him the AB's for suspected chest infection but the tonsillitis started a few hours after they were prescribed.

See a doctor. I had this and they gave me a different antibiotic after 3 days of full doses.

Within a day or two ime and I’ve had it a million times in my life. You need to go back to the doctor.

Currently waiting for a call back

You need penicliin for 10 days for tonsilitis, the antibiotics for chest infections are different. Tonsilitis not treated for the 10 days can become rheumatic fever which damages the heart valves.

Hoppinggreen · 12/12/2022 10:06

It’s usually pretty quick.
I had the worst tonsillitis I had ever experienced last Christmas. I got ABs on Boxing Day and by 27th the pain was so much better

ChristmasCatsAndKids · 12/12/2022 10:26

We've had a call back, we're carrying on with the same AB's for now but also having a swab to be on the safe side.
