I’m all out of ideas. No landfill, anything useful, consumable?

I used to go with favourite foods with money wrapped round 😂

Offleyhoo · 12/12/2022 08:30

If he's into the gym, protein bars, biltong, Bulldog toiletries, jar of Manilife nut butter.
Things they can't afford and run out of like pants & socks.
Novelty playing cards..

PingPongMerrilyWithPie · 12/12/2022 08:31

Stationery - highlighter pens, index cards
Blue tac
Shower gel
shaving stuff
Gloves, hat
book
cartoon coaster (arguably landfill but DD could do with one by her bed)
My boy teen still likes bath bombs but that's probably a bit niche.
hobby consumables - guitar strings, mouth guard, magazine

We don't do Christmas themed things except DS loves his "random beardy man" socks which he wears all year round ironically.

It gets harder every year.

cptartapp · 12/12/2022 08:34

Set of spicy sauces.

SoupDragon · 12/12/2022 08:38

DS1 loved the "Curry King" book and spices I got him from The Spicery. He is still making curries from it (although the spices have needed refilling!)

SixCharactersinSearchofanAuthor · 12/12/2022 08:38

I went practical-

Roll of bin liners
Freezer zip bags
Tupperware boxes
Mug
Pint glass
Cutlery tray
Shower gel
Viakal spray
Posh shaving gel
New dishwasher brush (because otherwise he'd use the same one all year)

I'm not a monster, I'll chuck some sweets and chocolate in there as well.

Amongst lots of useful things, I've added one frivolous item from

Bin liners and viakal 🤣👍

caffelattetogo · 12/12/2022 08:52

Insulated coffee mug
Chargers and power banks
Warm gloves with touch screen

Galliano · 12/12/2022 08:54

Alcohol - cans of craft beer, cocktails etc
Heated gloves which plug into laptop, about a fiver from eBay/amazon
Book appropriate to adult self, beanie annual for old times sake

iknowimcoming · 12/12/2022 09:05

Lip balm and hand cream

ifonly4 · 12/12/2022 09:13

If he needs to travel back to uni by public transport, I'd stick to vouchers (either for clothes or places to eat/drink near uni) or things he might he/drink at home - alcohol (check he drinks) and chocolates. My DD will be here about a month and will come back with a suitcase full of clothes, so there's literally no room for gifts. Sadly people have bought her stuff before and she just hasn't got the room to take it back.

If there's more money or transporting case back isn't an issue, then might be worth seeing if he needs a warm top, dressing gown - my DD's flat mates are refusing to put heating on due to cost and she's freezing (not the only ones from what I can gather).

Offleyhoo · 12/12/2022 10:06

Very good point about them getting anything useful back to uni (though I'm sure ds can find room for some bin liners, viakal and handcream!)

sashh · 12/12/2022 10:09

Handwarmer - you can got ones that are also a power bank.

Emergency chocolate. You can actually get chocolate with 'in case of emergency' on the wrapper.

Mini first aid kit. You can get them on a key ring.

Mini sewing kit.

Voucher for a pub.

Theatre tickets for a Wednesday pm if they don't play sports. I got my niece tickets for Avenue Q when she was at uni and they went down well.

Extra toilet roll.

You can get lots of practical things on key rings, scissors, pens etc.

BlackeyedSusan · 12/12/2022 10:22

My teen gets toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, stationery, as well as sweets chocolate coins and an orange.

SoupDragon · 12/12/2022 10:27

I've made Christmas spiced rum before too which was popular.

MrsJBaptiste · 12/12/2022 10:34

I'm getting some good ideas here! So far I've bought:

Wooden spoons
Pans
Socks
Just Eat voucher
Vodka
