How to clear mucus in toddler?

DS try as he might hasn’t quite worked out how to blow his nose and it’s a nightmare as he’s really snotty at the moment so getting loads of mucus in his throat as he swallows everything back. It’s resulting in a mucus clearing cough and nothing I’ve tried has cut through the mucus.

does anyone have a magic cure for getting rid? It gets better if he coughs and brings it up ( as in being sick but not properly sick) but he doesn’t understand to spit it out the rest of the time.

I have a feeling if we can clear it, it will help him hugely.he’s also got conjunctivitis at the moment so is generally pretty grotty all round poor thing

Try a medicine with guaifenesin in it. It thins mucus and makes it easier to clear

Saline spray up his nose to loosen it, then one of the Nuk bulb nose suckers to suck it out.
Revolting but the only way to shift it when they're little.

We are in the throes of the same with 2yo DC3 and he's miserable, poor little pickle

Olbas oil in boiling water in his room overnight

He does t have to spit it out (which I always thought you should). My husband said if swallowed it just gets broken done by the stomach acid and it won't prolonged the Illness

But I know what you mean.
Get him in a steamy room for 10 mins
Get him to run back and forth a couple of time. That'll get it hacking up.

Have you tried the nasal irrigation thing? You can get it on Amazon. Have a look at the TikTok videos... it just lets everything out...

Cut out dairy. I was a child plagued with coughs and it worked for me. Also spitting as much out as possible (tmi).

Not preaching but since I went veggie to vegan as an adult, I have had zero thick mucus since (dairy was the only change).

Oh yes and Olbas oil on a tissue inside pillowcase

I do this for myself and it's so good.

In some cultures, the mother will suck the mucus through the childs nose, then spit it out.
I have seen it many times in the clinic I worked in and it made me gag, but probably a good idea.

Drcoxisafox · 12/12/2022 13:19

@Rubyupbeat you made me remember I have a gadget that does this, hadn’t used it since DS was a newborn. Just managed to persuade him and oh my god the amount of snot that came out of him. Nearly made me sick.

going to keep doing it as surely that will help and stop it getting into his throat? If that’s where it’s coming from!
