Flies in house - help

For the last 2 weeks, there’s been small black flies in our home and I just want to get rid of them.

It started one night when we had friends over and accidentally left a window open all night. When we got back, the first fly appeared and was flying at my friend.

They are very small. They look similar to house plant gnats, but don’t seem to be in our plants. There is just one that appears at a time. They sometimes are just on the wall. Sometimes they fly at us in the night eg if the lights are off but someone’s using their phone. Sometimes going into the bathroom first thing in the morning stirs a fly into motion.

I’ve cleaned the house but can’t help but think there’s an infestation somewhere. We’ve got rid of about 7 so far, and haven’t had the windows open for more to fly in.

If they are a common presence in the bathroom they might have set up camp in the sink drains I reckon.

I’m just about to pour boiling water down the drains thanks

They could be fruit flies although they're more common in summer - try leaving out some apple cider vinegar with liquid soap in a jar and it might trap them

We have exactly the same thing and I've seen another thread on here about it. I've bought a fruit fly trap from Amazon but not convinced they are fruit flies. I just want them gone!

I don’t think they’re fruit flies - saw some of those in summer. As a result I’ve been super diligent in keeping the home a fly free zone! Fruit flies seem way faster and were red in colour. These flies are black.

Since posting, I’ve completely cleaned all rooms aside from the bedroom

Deep clean too - ovens, windows, skirting boards. Have emptied the cupboards and gotten rid of any food we haven’t touched recently. Taken bins out.

I’m going to buy drain unblocker gel and houseplant anti-fly spray tomorrow. They’re fucking off one way or another.

Also these flies don’t seem interested in food. I left out some watermelon overnight and nothing was on it the next day.

@RocketIceLollie thank you for the advice - the buggers are gone, probably due to the drains!

I can highly recommend midge / fly screens to avoid the issue in future . We got our from Newblinds , they are the roller type and my husband has fitted them to every window in the house .
